Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is set to hit international theaters this week, we have the chance to speak with the fantastic English voice about their new movie.
The world of voice acting and English dubbing are two of the most fascinating subcategories of the anime industry, with cast members tasked with the incredibly difficult task of bringing our favorite animated characters to life.
This is especially true for the English voice actors, who not only have to express the emotions and personality of a character, but at the same time have to adhere to the original script / animations.
HITC recently had the opportunity to interview the English cast for the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film and was able to brainstorm about the fascinating approach they took to MAPPA’s last masterpiece.
The challenge of character growth in a prequel continues
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a prequel story for the main television series that aired from October 2020 to March 2021, adapted the Cursed Child Arc, and focused on the events at Jujutsu High one year before the show.
On the one hand, the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 cast must continue the growth and development that made their characters so fantastic to watch in the main sequence. However, with the film being a prequel to these events from the main series, viewers need to understand where the characters in their lives are now in the film – unlike a year later during the series.
“For most of our characters, I’m sure we all felt that way, but when you make a series, you can somehow figure out what your character sounds like and who they are about halfway through the recording. So, for me, it was so cool now to go back with all that information, go back and be a full character in a movie. It was super cool. ” – Matthew David Rudd, Panda.
Allegra Clark, who plays Maki in the English dubbing of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, added that “it was really interesting to meet her at an earlier point [from] in the series when it is even more guarded.
Clark then explained as “Because it’s the events of the movie that teach her to be a little more open and a little more willing to make friends than she is in the show, so it was interesting for one of the previous points they play. “
In the main television series, Jujutsu Kaisen centers around Yuji; an exceptional lead character with the charm and attitude needed to become an icon in the anime community.
Anyway, the new main character in the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie, Yuta Okkotsu, is a brand new addition to the anime universe – so it was certainly an extra pressure that Yuta puts on when fans compare him to Yuji, right?
Apparently not, with voice actress Kayleigh McKee explaining how she actually never saw the relationship between Yuji and Yuta as main characters, but wanted to bring her own energy into the role.
“I knew Yuji was an amazing main character and I knew Yuta was kind of the first step main character kind of thing. But as far as Dub, I know Adam [McArthur, Yuji’s English voice actor] and he is a wonderful guy, and I also saw the anime subbed and dubbed. So, I saw it as an opportunity to bring another character into the universe, the only thing I really thought versus Yuji was, ‘let’s make sure I’ve given a different energy’. – Kayleigh McKee, Yuta, Press Event.
Fancy rice balls and sushi after a recording session
One of the most interesting characters in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is Toge Inumaki, the boy wonder who can only speak in Rice Ball Ingredients as a Cursed Speech user.
However, a character with such a limited range, in terms of spoken dialogue, can be a remarkable and fascinating challenge for the voice actors. It’s hard enough to live an anime character in the right way, let alone if you’re limited to “Salmon Roe” or “Kelp” for example.
“It’s so interesting because you have to express a character arc, but as your line just says Tuna Mayo. Then you have to be like that, let’s see what meaning we can deduce in this.” – Xander Mobus, Toge, Press Event.
When we got the chance to speak with Xander Mobus, Toge’s voice, we made sure that the first question was probably the most important of the entire interview … Does he really like rice balls and sushi?
Fortunately, Xander is as much a fan of Rice Balls as the character he portrays so professionally, with Matthew David Rudd jokingly adding that “Yeah, I also like Rice Balls after watching Xander in a recording session yes.”
Allgra Clark then remarked that “after watching the movie, I both cried a little, but then I was like ‘Oh, I could really go sushi now'” so maybe swinging at a restaurant after eating the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 in a theater?
Create an iconic character dynamic for the fans
While the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie shows the back faces of Toge, Panda and Maki; we all know it’s the gojo show we’ve been waiting for.
In the new film, the Gojo is still his iconic self – but he really shines in opposition to the Geto Suguru; the former classmate became evil, whose evil plan we see unfolds over the course of history.
These two characters jumped out of each other, emotionally and tonally, all over Jujutsu Kaisen 0 in a fantastic performance by both the voice actors; but how is this dynamic for two bigger-than-life characters like Gojo and Suguru?
“It was really cool to see some of their relationship, the background of their story and to see where they are connected. It was really cool. That was the main advantage of me was to see where they came from and be able to relate to that. being in scenes together, watching them evolve it was cool.- Lex Lang, Suguru, Press Event.
Kaiji Teng, who plays Gojo, then added that their relationship “is a very complicated one, it’s a very involved one, its very” gray story “” but that “it was really great for some of that touches in the film. and in the series that follows, I’m sure we’ll get deeper into that. “
“It’s very liberating to meet a character who does not sound in a very specific place. As the Gojo has this freedom to be anywhere on the vocal spectrum, he’s loud, he’s quiet, he’s serious, he’s stupid. He’s everywhere. and it makes him more of a complete person in my opinion.
Kaiji then explained how “Many of the times, when we love a game or a show and you have an episodic character, you never get the chance to really immerse yourself in the character as a full person.”
However, the task of bringing Gojo and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was accomplished by Kaiji: “I feel like for Gojo it’s easier in a sense because he’s emotionally unstable as he never has himself as a character. had to rule. “
