RTÉ director general resigns over Tubridy payments

RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes has resigned with immediate effect.

The move comes because presenter Ryan Tubridy was paid €345,000 (£296,800) more than what was revealed in the Irish broadcaster’s earnings reports.

The TV and radio presenter received the payments between 2017 and 2022.

In a statement Monday, Ms Forbes said she “participated in the processes to answer questions related to payments to Ryan Tubridy and consistently worked with them”.

“As CEO, I have a responsibility for what happens within the organization and I take that responsibility seriously,” she added.

“I submit my resignation to RTÉ with immediate effect.”

Mr Tubridy recently stepped down as presenter of RTÉ One’s The Late Late Show, Ireland’s longest-running TV chat show. Northern Irish comedian Patrick Kielty has been announced as the successor.

The Irish broadcaster has been invited to appear before the media committee of the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament) on Wednesday.

This will be followed by another appearance before the Audit Committee on Thursday.

In addition, there will be an independent external review of the broadcaster’s corporate governance.

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) at RTÉ welcomed the announcement, saying any review must be transparent and timely.
