No woman played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League during Eve Gascon’s lifetime.
That will change.
Gascon, 18, is set to make his QMJHL debut for Gatineau Olympiques on Saturday when the team faces the Rimouski Oceanic. She will feature Manon Rheaume and Charline Labonté as the only women to do so in QMJHL history. Labonté last played in 2000-01, recording the first female goalkeeping victory in league history.
Labonte said in a 2019 interview with Hockey Canada, she has full confidence that Gascon will become a star. Gascon joins the team for the match against Val D’or Foreurs on Saturday.
If you’ve been following the ladies hockey scene in recent years, you know all too well what Gascon is bringing to the table. She had an excellent run with the Canada U-18 team in 2019, winning silver after a glorious four-game stretch.
Gascon is also the only female goalkeeper to be a starter in the top Quebec Midget League, spending two seasons with college Esther-Blondin Phenix before being ruled out of the game last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
