US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed the death of a US citizen on Thursday Ukraine, although I had no further details to share. A State Department spokesman said the death occurred on March 17.
Blinken made the announcement during a press conference on Thursday.
“We offer our sincere condolences to the family for their loss,” the State Department spokesman said. “Out of respect for the family during this difficult time, we have no further comment.”
Earlier on Thursday, a Ukrainian official said an American had been killed in the country.
Thursday was three weeks since Russia invaded Ukraine, with the latest U.S. and British intelligence reports suggesting that Russia’s military advance on major cities has stalled.
But in Chernihiv, southeast of Kharkiv, Russian missile and artillery attacks have been hitting the area for weeks. Ukraine’s emergency services said Thursday that a hostel had been bombed there and killed a mother, a father and three of her children, including 3-year-old twins.

Also on Thursday, 21 people were killed by Russian artillery that destroyed a school and a community center in Merefa, near Kharkiv, authorities said.
