The Ammolite is to be Alberta’s official gemstone.
The gemstone, found mainly in the southern part of the province, would be added to the emblem of Alberta Act when it happens.
“Ammolite is an iridescent gemstone from the fossilized shells of mollusks, known as ammonites, that lived in an inland sea east of the Rocky Mountains,” the province said in a press release. “After sinking into the ocean floor, the mud that covered ammonites hardened over millions of years to become shale. degraded today and used for jewelry. “
Alberta Secretary of Culture Ron Orr called the Ammolite “an important part of our heritage and economy.”
Ammonite mussels are still collected by blackfoot communities for divine purposes, the province said.
Other Alberta emblems include the coat of arms, flag and wild rose.
