Hogwarts Legacy, the open world Harry Potter adventure, which takes place in the famous magic school, will be launched during the holiday season 2022 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Avalanche Software and Sony Interactive Entertainment aired about 15 minutes of gameplay on Thursday afternoon, during a State of Play livestream Hogwarts Legacy.
Players got a glimpse of Hogwarts Legacythe character creation, some of the activities they encounter inside and outside the school, and a brief introduction to the story that connects them all. Hogwarts Legacy was played in the late 1800s, about 100 years before Harry Potter was recorded.
In the Hogwarts Legacy, the player character is a new wizard or witch, unless they start as a fifth year student. So the introduction brings the players to the speed of the systems and controls of the game, as well as brings the character into the present story. This involves a kind of intrigue with goblins and dark wizards. The tutorial stages seem to be the investigation of a goblin rebellion with the brand new NPC, Professor Figg. Later in the 15-minute trailer, a “dark path” was suggested when players decided to pursue it.
Hogwarts Legacy as well seems to touch all the familiar characters of an action RPG, including crafts (from both potions and magic items), skills and perk trees, and friend and follower parties, where NPCs add special talents to the adventure group. Hogwarts’ secret space of requirement can be found within the academy, and it serves as a customizable hub between story missions.
Although the game fits into the overall Harry Potter Canon, creator JK Rowling is not involved Hogwarts Legacythe creation. Immediately after the announcement Hogwarts Legacy September 2020, last Warner Bros. Games distanced the project from her in light of Rowling’s public, and transphobic, remarks on gender identity.
So the reception Hogwarts Legacy obtained from the general public will be closely monitored. Many LGBTQ defenders have already renounced their fandom for the larger realm of Harry Potter works, and consider joining the game to support Rowling and her views directly.
Others also noted that the game’s former lead designer maintained a YouTube channel where he supported right-wing positions and radiated similar cultural grief. That developer left Avalanche Software under a cloud in March 2021.
