Weekly Rumors – Five Days to the NHL Trading Deadline!

We’re now under a week of the NHL Trade Deadline and movements happening! The Colorado Avalanche did some crafting earlier this week to get Josh Manson from the Ducks and then flip Tyson Jost to Minnesota for Nico Sturm.

With the Manson deal, they kept Anaheim $ 2 million and the other deal saved them about $ 1.3 million in cash. They are clearly looking to make another big move and many people seem to associate it with Claude Giroux. The market for the Flyers captain will surely heat up after he plays his 1000th game with the club tonight, a milestone that is very important for him.

Avalanche will try to get him. I would expect the st. The Florida Panthers are an Eastern Conference team that seems to have an interest in him as well. The flyers will get a very good chunk back in this move. Giroux ranks # 1 on Frank Seravalli’s Trade Targets list.

Speaking of this list, he updated it earlier this week and added 15 new games.

The two big names were Tyler Bertuzzi and Sean Monahan. The latter is interesting because one would assume that when the Flames take down the Monahan and hit its $ 6,375m cap, it’s because they have their eyes on another great addition.

Monahan has a 10 Team No-Trade list he can drop off, so I doubt he would want to leave a solid Calgary team and still join some rebuilding teams. This feels like a move that could possibly happen in the offseason but you never know.

Bertuzzi is fascinating as he is only 27 years old and he produces almost one point per game rate. He is also under contract for one more year with a $ 4.75m cap hit. There’s no doubt that many teams would be interested, but I’m not sure why Detroit wants to move him. He is young enough to grow together with her newly established young core. The only reason I could see them moving him is because they know they do not want to commit big money to him in a few years.

The other thing that would complicate any potential move is Bertuzzi’s vaccination status. As one of the two unvaccinated players in the league, he is not eligible to play games in Canada. Why would any team get him before the playoffs when there is a chance he can not help them in a potential series against a Canadian club?

There are some new names on the Trade Targets list that should interest the Oilers. The first is left-handed defender, Carson Soucy.

I’ve talked about him as a potential fit for the Oilers on more than one occasion and I stand by it. He’s just 27 years old, is strong in his own zone, and he’s signed for one more season with a very reasonable $ 2.75m cap hit. He is exactly what they need and would give them a strong third-pairing shutdown option.

The only issue would be the acquisition cost. I’m sure the Oilers would like to drop Tyson Barrie in a potential deal with Seattle, but it has to be a sweetie.

Some defenders that cost almost not as much as Soucy but are on Frank’s list include Brett Kulak, Calvin De Haan and Robert Hagg.

What do the oilers have that they can offer? I would imagine they would be open to moving on to one of their next two second rounds. They also have a fifth-round draft this year and their third and fourth rounds in 2023. All of them should be on the table. It sounds like the organization is open to moving Dmitri Samorukov even if a team wanted a perspective.

They also have the Josh Archibald situation that is worth keeping an eye on. If an American team likes him and the Oilers have a later choice to pull him back, I wonder if they will turn around and get a new depth going forward to slip into the lineup.

Mark Spector wrote that Arturri Lehkonen might be a name to look at, but I think he will at least get a second round pick and I just can not see the Oilers giving that up for a guy who is on their third line true.

Spector also names Justin Braun. There were so many siblings around him and the Oilers that I would call him their most likely deadline acquisition.

As for the oilers in the goalkeeping market, it sounds like Ken Holland is just running with what they have. They apparently do not see any of the realistic options on the market as major upgrades.

Mike Smith, however, starts tonight against Buffalo and if it does not go well, I would imagine that the Oilers are thinking long and hard about going down with a three-goal system.

The Oilers are currently in a playoff spot in the Pacific Division and are mainly in control of their own destiny. This is mainly due to the Golden Knights falling from the ground. GM Kelly McCrimmon has some big decisions to make in the next few days. Before I get to Vegas, I want to hit on the friendliest Oilers rumor we’re having right now …

ARE OILERS ON CUBALIK?

Chicago Blackhawks Beat reported Ben Pope wrote yesterday that the Blackhawks are close to the trade of forward Dominik Kubalik and that the Oilers and Ducks are finalists for him. Kubalik is just 26 years old and in his third season in the league. His rookie year was by far his best season as he posted 30 goals and was a finalist for the Calder Trophy. He has been up and down ever since and has really struggled on points this season.

He has a cap hit of $ 3.6 million this season and is due for a qualifying bid of around $ 4 million for next season because he is a pending RFA.

Kubalik is a very fascinating striker. He shoots a lot, but his finish is not what it was before in 19-20, when he scored 30 goals and 68 GPs. He’s also a bad playmaker and puck-mover.

I have mixed opinions about him. He has a $ 4M QO next year, which he will not be worth. pic.twitter.com/ktf9DT73vB

I like Kubalik, but I do not like him. I generally agree with Sid’s analysis here as well. Tom Gazzola, who is fully committed, said a Kubalik deal in his opinion would not make much sense to the Oilers, but he said a potential return could include Kailer Yamamoto. I do not like the idea of exchanging the two players, I think Yamamoto is better and his next contract will be cheaper, but if the Hawks take back Tyson Barrie and beat Calvin De Haan, then I think there’s a chance is that this could be a win for Edmonton. Feels unlikely though.

WHAT WILL THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS DO?

In the 14 games since Jack Eichel’s first game with the club, the Vegas Golden Knights have managed to win just four wins. There were some nasty losses for non-playoff teams during that time, the last of which was a Tuesday night when they lost 7-3 to the Winnipeg Jets despite only 23 shots on goal.

They are really hurting now, in more ways than one. They miss Mark Stone, Alec Martinez, Reilly Smith, and most likely Robin Lehner. Yes, they should start to get healthier, but you have to ask yourself if it is too late.

I feel as if Lehner’s injury and their goalkeeper difficulties cause them to go out and get a goalkeeper before the deadline. They apparently reached out to the Blackhawks to inquire about Fleury a few weeks ago and they apparently had an interest in Alexandar Georgiev. Those are two names to keep an eye on as Vegas looks to turn their season around.

HERTL IS FROM THE BOARD

Tomas Hertl was right behind Claude Giroux on the trade goal list and now he is going nowhere. The San Jose Sharks have suspended the 29-year-old forward on an eight-year extension, which has an AAV of $ 8 million.

Hertl has been a cornerstone for the Sharks for many years, but I’m honestly a little surprised they did not pay on its value. He would most likely have given them a first-round pick and a solid perspective. Instead, they paid market value to keep him and they would pay him a lot of money when he was in his mid-30s.

I do not see sharks as close to the competition and think they would have been better off trading Hertl, getting future assets in the process, and maybe spending the money elsewhere in the summer. They chose to reward a player who, however, did a lot of good for their organization.

The Sharks were still able to make some moves in the deadline. Defender Jacob Middleton could bring them a second-round pick and striker Alex Barbanov, who has nine goals in 51 games this season, could also be moved.

  • Mark Giordano was removed from the Kraken lineup last night. Ben Chariot was suspended from the Habs lineup earlier this week. That does not mean that a deal is close, the teams are just extra careful with their trading pieces.
  • The Panthers dropped $ 2.35m in caps when they sent Frank Vatrano to the New York Rangers. I wonder if they have their eyes on another bigger name going forward. If they did not get the Giroux, who else could they count on? Rickard Rakell, Tomas Hertl, and Tyler Motte are the next three rental price forwards on Frank’s list.
  • As I talked about last week, the stars will keep their pending free agents. Klingberg and Holtby are expected to stay in Dallas.
  • Friedman and Marek have reported that Western Conference teams are interested in Canadiens striker Christian Dvorak. He has scored seven goals in 34 games with the Habs this season and has three years more at $ 4.45 million.
  • Pierre LeBrun connected the Bruins with Jakob Chychrun.
  • Friedman says the Arizona Coyotes are trying to re-sign goalkeeper Karel Vejmelka and in typical Coyotes fashion, they are also trying to get Shea Weber’s contract.
  • When the Jets deal with Andrew Copp, Darren Dreger says Avalanche, Rangers and Bruins are interested.
