The protagonist joins the goal post during the Everton-Newcastle United match

The Premier League match between Everton and Newcastle United was held for eight minutes on Thursday after a protester tied to the goal post at Gwladys Street end of Goodison Park.

The incident happened just after the break, the ground invader was spotted wearing a jersey with the words “Just Stop Oil” on it.

Then the group, which claimed responsibility for the protest, said on Twitter: “Our government is betraying us by financing new oil fields in the North Sea. New oil means destruction of the future of our children.

“It means war on small island states. And it now means suffering for the poorest and most marginalized in all regions.”

Newcastle are in possession of a consortium with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, and the protest comes in the week that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited the country.

It took a number of stewards and security personnel to remove the intruder after he was cut off from the post, and had to be carried out of the stadium because he refused to leave alone.

He was also briefly attacked by another fan who ran onto the ground as security tried to pull the protester away.

Everton won the match 1-0.
