A Question Time Viewer, Clover, asked the panel how to make the process easier for a Ukrainian refugee after she offered her home but has yet to hear from the government website.

Labor’s Wes Streeting said: “I think the best thing the government can do is work with specialists in this area. There are some ingenious charities out there.

“Local authorities have relationships at the community level, and they are capable of doing things like welfare inspections with resources.

He added: “You can not have a situation where people are effectively searching the internet to find people in need.

“I have to say in my six years or so of being a Member of Parliament, the worst organization I have ever dealt with is the Interior Ministry, because thieves have never managed to deal humanely with people in the immigration process.”
