House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said Republican Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina was “wrong” to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/span> a “bully” but says he will still support Cawthorn’s candidacy for re-election.<\/p>\n

The North Carolina Republican has been criticized in recent days after reports surfaced, followed by a video in which he told Asheville, North Carolina supporters, “Zelenskyy is a bully” and “Remember the government Ukrainian is incredibly corrupt, and it is incredibly bad, and it has been driving awakened ideologies. “<\/p>\n

His minority opinion: The Ukrainian president is widely admired around the world and in Congress as an inspiring leader who has united his people and much of the international community against a withered and unprovoked. assault on Russia<\/span>. When Zelenskyy addressed Congress earlier this week, he received a standing ovation from lawmakers from both parties.<\/p>\n

Asked about Cawthorn’s comments on Friday, McCarthy replied, “Madison is wrong. If there’s one bully in this world, it’s Putin.”<\/p>\n

But the GOP leader, when asked by a journalist if he would support Cawthorn’s House’s re-election proposal, said “yes.”<\/p>\n

Cawthorn’s comments came to light when Congress moved quickly to punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine<\/span>, are the latest example of McCarthy’s struggle to manage a conflicted conference. Last month, representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Paul Gosar of Arizona appeared before<\/span> the America First Political Action Conference, which is organized by white nationalist Nick Fuentes. Greene has also faced several convictions comments<\/span> comparing the mandates of COVID-19 with the Holocaust. <\/p>\n

McCarthy often addresses these issues in private conversations with his members. The only lawmaker who has faced persistent consequences is Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, who was withdrawal from his leadership position<\/span> at the Republican House conference after repeatedly criticizing former President Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 riot. <\/p>\n

McCarthy has done the same avalat<\/span> Wyoming attorney Harriet Hageman, who is challenging Cheney in her primary election.<\/p>\n
