And then, when coach Shaheen Holloway finally found his phone, there were 791 texts.<\/p>\n<p>For star players, there were messages of all kinds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My phone blew up a lot,&#8221; said Daryl Banks III, who dropped Kentucky by 27 points.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Which is awesome,&#8221; said Doug Edert, the 20-year-old mustache protector.<\/p>\n<p>And that, in this new era of college athletics, represents opportunity.<\/p>\n<figure >\n<div >\n<div>\n<div ><noscript><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption >Saint Peter&#8217;s Guard Daryl Banks III has made sure Kentucky fans do not forget his name for a long time after leading the Peacocks to the stunner of the 2022 men&#8217;s tournament. Since the rules and laws changed last summer, experts have predicted that March will be rewarded with success with commercial partnerships.  In view, after st. They should not have [their] The phone. &#8220;<\/p>\n<p>They had about 45 hours between the biggest games of their lives, and therefore zero hours to negotiate with companies.  &#8220;They can not place an advertisement between players,&#8221; said Zach Soskin, an athlete brand builder.  Instead, their situations highlight the barriers between Cinderellas and financial rewards.<\/p>\n<p>But these rewards are out there, waiting for the right moments and main characters.<\/p>\n<p><button >The story goes on<\/button><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The longevity of a Christian Laettner shot, it&#8217;s crazy,&#8221; Soskin said.  &#8220;It&#8217;s massive. It&#8217;s millions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Prepare to critically take advantage of NIL opportunities<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before last summer&#8217;s rule change kicked off the NIL era, the NCAA Tournament for Men enriched everyone besides the players.  This was especially true when a small conference program such as the St.<\/p>\n<p>Previous NCAA tournament upsets have generated tens of millions of dollars worth of media exposure for Victory Universities and benefited them in far-reaching ways.  Freshman applications have often been on the rise.  So alumni have donations, and ticket and merchandise sales.<\/p>\n<p>More often than not, the winning coach has also upset an NCAA tournament and parlayed a lucrative raise or a plum new job.  Andy Enfield and Kermit Davis are among the many who have used March moments as a springboard to disrupt conference programs.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, the athletes who helped deliver these moments were left with only memories.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now,&#8221; said Peter Schoenthal, CEO of NIL Management Startup Athliance, &#8220;those athletes can not only do that run and be remembered forever, they also get to &#8230; benefit from it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If Christan Laettner had hit his iconic turnaround jumper in 2022 instead of 1992, experts say it would have been a $ 1 million moment.  The shot has the ideal combination of a widely acclaimed star, a Marquee College program and the gravity of a possible national championship run.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the brands would have jumped at the chance for months, if not years, to associate with a player like that,&#8221; said sports attorney and NIL attorney Darren Heitner.  &#8220;It&#8217;s like the perfect storm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While the Laettner shot may be difficult to fit into any modern March moment, experts insist a buzzer beater will still be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars if the right player hits it in the right situation.  In other words, Paolo Banchero, Chet Holmgren, Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers usually get more lucrative offers than a lesser known player from a smaller school.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say the first bids may come from memorabilia retailers who want to pay players to sign jerseys and basketballs, and merchandise companies that use their similarity to sell T-shirts.  Other offers could come from almost anywhere &#8211; companies sponsoring the NCAA Tournament or special school, smaller businesses with connections to the player&#8217;s hometown or college town, even a company that rhymes with the player&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n<p>The key, experts said, is to be prepared for these offers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you are not prepared,&#8221; Schoenthal said, &#8220;it can actually cause more headaches and be something that is really stressful as you progress through the tournament.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While some future all-Americans and pro-prospects often have marketing representatives who help broker-dealers, most college players do not.  Companies often have to go through school to ask for a player&#8217;s contact information or access it directly via social media.  The Banks, the St.  Peter&#8217;s Guard, seems to indicate that he received immediate requests.<\/p>\n<p>It is the players that the NIL experts say need to plan ahead, just in case that moment arises in the light.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you shoot that big shot in the first round, the last thing you want to do is get your ducks in a row to make sure you can take advantage of your name, image and similarity,&#8221; Schoenthal said.  &#8220;That will take away your ability to prepare for the next round and continue on that journey.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure >\n<div >\n<div>\n<div ><noscript><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption >Saint Peter&#8217;s Peacocks players, including Doug Edert (25) and Hassan Drame (14), take the team to court during their excitement of Kentucky.  (Photo by Zach Bolinger \/ Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Quick turnaround of NCAA tournament makes cashing difficult for rising stars<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If NIL experts were in charge of NCAA tournament-related programs, players would do more than practice sets and watch feature films before their first round of play.  They would advise all players to designate one that they can trust as a point trust that can sift through NIL offers and bargain deals should come up with opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The NCAA tournament happens so fast,&#8221; Soskin said.  &#8220;If you hit the shot, on your one or two days off, you can not negotiate the deal. You have to have someone you trust to do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Others in the NIL area would go even further with their pre-NCAA tournament preparation.<\/p>\n<p>Longtime sports agent Leigh Steinberg suggests players prepare a portfolio and send it to anyone from advertising agencies, to NCAA tournament sponsors, to the stores owned by alumni of the athletics school.  The portfolio would include photos of the athlete playing with his or her team, and a biography showing &#8220;the player in the best light.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Did he fight a disease?&#8221;  Steinberg said.  &#8220;Does he have a charity? Is there something interesting in his background? I would have put it together and I would give it to as many companies as I could get.<\/p>\n<p>The stars of Peter were instead virtually unknown.  Banks and Edert each had less than 3,000 followers on Instagram, and less than 300 on Twitter.  Even after Thursday&#8217;s triumph, no profile exploded.  Both hit clutch shots, but neither produced an incomprehensible, viral <em>Moment<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear whether either is ready for constant buzzing phones and unexpected offers.  The flood of notifications, the banks admitted, &#8220;took a while to get through.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s very clear, though, is that a Saturday can prolong their moment, or conjure up another.  They finished 10th in number 15 seed to shock a No. 2 seed in the men\u2019s tournament.  Only two of the previous nine have won a second game, and one of the two, Dunk City&#8217;s Florida Gulf Coast, is the most memorable.<\/p>\n<p>A second win would also give the Peacocks a second week and maybe a few free hours.  But for now, it&#8217;s sleep to get in and basketball business to open.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The attention is great in everything,&#8221; Edert said.  &#8220;I love the support. But it&#8217;s a quick move.
