The Great Barrier Reef could be destroyed by annual bleaching events if carbon emissions were not drastically cut off in this decade, a new report says.<\/p>\n

The Climate Council says if emissions continue at their current pace, coral bleaching could occur every two years until 2034 and every year until 2044.<\/p>\n

The 2300 km Welterbe site could not survive under these conditions, the report says.<\/p>\n

“These conditions would effectively destroy the reef, and the most shallow water tropical reef in the world,” the Climate Council reported Monday.<\/p>\n

“Under a high emission scenario, marine heat waves are projected to become 50 times more frequent by the end of the century and many parts of the ocean could reach an almost permanent state of marine heat wave.”<\/p>\n

The report said that net zero by 2050 would not be enough to slow rising ocean temperatures to protect reefs.<\/p>\n

Reducing emissions by between 50-75 percent this decade, said the Climate Council, the only way to ensure the reef survives.<\/p>\n

“As a first step, the federal government should fit key allies and commit to halving emissions this decade,” the report said.<\/p>\n

Federal authorities said Friday that another potential bleaching event has been identified on the reef.<\/p>\n

“It is widespread but variable, in many regions, ranging in impact from small to heavy,” the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority said in a statement.<\/p>\n

If confirmed, it would be the sixth Mass Bleach event and fourth in six years.<\/p>\n

Scientists have warned greenhouse gas emissions push up ocean temperatures, which in turn caused mass bleaching events on the reef in 1998, 2002, 2016, 2017 and 2020.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, a major report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said the reef was in crisis and faced with the prospect of irreversible damage.<\/p>\n

It warned that a future with high emissions could see the reef twice every decade of 2035 and every year after 2044.<\/p>\n

The bleaching in the new report coincides with a UN monitoring mission that arrived on Tuesday, at the request of Australia, to monitor the health of the ecosystem.<\/p>\n

UNESCO’s Reactive Monitoring Mission will spend nine days reviewing the Morrison Government Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan.<\/p>\n

It aims to “ensure that it addresses the dangers posed to the Great Barrier Reef by climate change and other factors, and paves the way for accelerated action in other areas affecting the state of this iconic natural site,” he said. UNESCO statement last week.<\/p>\n
