{"id":12110,"date":"2022-03-21T00:11:07","date_gmt":"2022-03-21T00:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tahrir2day.com\/news\/2022\/03\/21\/sam-burns-repeats-at-innisbrook-winning-valspar-championship-in-playoff\/"},"modified":"2022-03-21T00:11:07","modified_gmt":"2022-03-21T00:11:07","slug":"sam-burns-repeats-at-innisbrook-winning-valspar-championship-in-playoff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tahrir2day.com\/news\/2022\/03\/21\/sam-burns-repeats-at-innisbrook-winning-valspar-championship-in-playoff\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Burns repeats at Innisbrook, winning Valspar Championship in playoff"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>PALM HARBOR, Florida &#8211; Sam Burns is once again a winner at the Valspar Championship, this time with a lot more stress and a lot more emotion.<\/p>\n<p>Burns shot a birdie putt of just over 30 feet on the 16th hole to beat Davis Riley on the second playoff hole, giving him three PGA Tour victories in his last 22 starts.<\/p>\n<p>Burns, who closed with a 2-under 69, is the second straight back-to-back winner at Innisbrook after Paul Casey&#8217;s consecutive victories in 2018 and 2019. The tournament was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The victory moves Burns to number 10 in the world for the first time, beating Dustin Johnson out of the top 10 for the first time in seven years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Man, it&#8217;s crazy,&#8221; Burns said.  &#8220;Davis played well today, especially when he finished. I tried to stay consistent. I did not make many mistakes. Lots of time on Sunday when you plan your way around, do a bunch of pars, and some birds, many times it works well. So happy. &#8220;<\/p>\n<p>Burns won last year with 3 shots.<\/p>\n<aside >\n<figure><picture><source data-srcset=\"https:\/\/a2.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2022%2F0320%2Fr989303_1023x575_16%2D9.jpg&amp;w=570&amp;format=jpg, https:\/\/a2.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2022%2F0320%2Fr989303_1023x575_16%2D9.jpg&amp;w=1140&amp;cquality=40&amp;format=jpg 2x\" media=\"(min-width: 376px)\"><source data-srcset=\"https:\/\/a2.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2022%2F0320%2Fr989303_1023x575_16%2D9.jpg&amp;w=375, https:\/\/a2.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2022%2F0320%2Fr989303_1023x575_16%2D9.jpg&amp;w=750&amp;cquality=40&amp;format=jpg 2x\" media=\"(max-width: 375px)\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption ><cite>Photo by Julio Aguilar \/ Getty Images<\/cite><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Riley, a rookie who is fighting for the first time on the PGA Tour, defeated a Triple Bogey on the Par-5 fifth hole with a 5-iron clutch for Birdie on the Par-3 17. He had a 15- Foot Birdie Putt on the 18th for the win and left it to the right, finishing with a 72.<\/p>\n<p>Both made par on the 18th in the playoffs, with Riley saving the par from a front bunker.  Neither looked in a big birdie position on the 16th until Burns&#8217; putt caught the left edge and went 180 degrees around the cup before falling to the back.<\/p>\n<p>Riley hit a strong pitch that needed to hold on to extend the playoffs and missed long.<\/p>\n<p>Justin Thomas (70) and Matthew NeSmith (71) all completed a shot from the playoffs, and each had a share of the lead at some point during a tense final lap and warm, windy conditions on the Copperhead course.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was 1 shot from the lead as he was 54 yards short on par-5 11. It landed in a small hole that kept him from clean contact, and his wedge just went long and slightly rough.  His chip ran 12 feet through the hole and he took Bogey in the easiest hole in the course.<\/p>\n<p>A hole later, Burns made a 15-foot birdie putt and Thomas was suddenly four shots behind.  He had two straight birdies to stay in the game and had a chance as Burns de Bogey from the bunker on the 17th. the greens come.<\/p>\n<p>It was his fourth top-10 in six starts this year for Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I did nothing today and I could easily win the tournament,&#8221; said Thomas.  &#8220;I mean, good run at 18, and I got a wedge in there and could be just as easy in this playoff. But a lot to build on, a lot of positives, and we&#8217;ve come a long way, so I&#8217;m excited about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NeSmith fell back to the top nine with one Bogeys in a row.  A shot behind the head on the 10th tee, he did not make a birdie until his 12-foot putt on the 17th. .<\/p>\n<p>Those were the only four who had a serious chance of winning.<\/p>\n<p>Riley has never been on the back nine on the PGA Tour and looked like he could not get to Innisbrook.  Even though he started with a 2-shot lead and opened with four solid par, the par-5 fifth turned into a nightmare.<\/p>\n<p>From the good left of the fairway, he turned left down to the next sixth fairway, only to crack his third shot from 106 yards into the base of a tree.
