The Virginia softball team jumped on an early lead and never looked back on the road to an 8-1 victory over NC State on Sunday in Raleigh, NC<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Cavaliers used a pair of home runs and a five-run third inning to claim their victory over the Wolfpack and earn their first series over an ACC opponent since the 2019 season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

With the win, Virginia improved to 18-11 overall and 5-1 at the ACC, its best start to conference play since the 2010 season, when the Cavaliers started the ACC Slate 6-0.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“What a great Team Weekend,” said Virginia Coach Joanna Hardin. “I felt like our team came out today with a hunger to end the series with a win.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Virginia jumped into the lead for the second straight day, with a two-run shot from Tori Gilbert in first place to get on board. The Cavaliers then added five more runs in the third, a two-RBI double by Arizona Ritchie and a three-run home run by Sarah Coon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

NC State got a solo home run in the fourth that broke a no-hitter for UVa starter Aly Rayle, but Virginia ran the run back in the sixth inning as Abby Weaver delivered an RBI single to Gilbert, who had a Pitch was hit. .<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“From the first inning, we put up the pressure and never let go,” Hardin said. “The ACC is a tough league and every game will be a dogfight. Our team showed a ton of crap and fought hard all weekend. That’s what I’m most proud of today.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rayle (4-1) picked up the win for Virginia after allowing just one run on one hit with three walks and seven strikes and 5.0 innings of work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Virginia goes back into action Tuesday night when it takes on Liberty at 7pm in Palmer Park.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“We will enjoy this on the way back home, rest and work again on Monday,” Hardin said. \u201cI love this team and that I go back to working with them [Monday] as we prepare to host Liberty on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

No. 11 UVa Downs Clemson<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

The No. 11 Virginia men’s tennis team ended their weekend with a 4-0 victory over Clemson on Sunday at the Duckworth Family Tennis Center in Clemson, SC. The Cavaliers (12-5, 6-0 ACC) won the double and opted for victories on individual courts three to five to achieve victory.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Virginia opened the match with 6-2 wins on double courts two and three to win the double. UVa led 5-2 at the top court when it was abandoned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In singles, Bar Botzer is back in line-up with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory over Spencer Whitaker on Court 3 to give UVa a 2-0 lead. Gianni Ross then won with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at court five, then Ryan Goetz won the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at court four.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

No. 11 Hoos dropped by No. 10 Hurricanes<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

The No. 11 Virginia tennis women’s team suffered a 6-1 defeat against No. 10 Miami on a blue Sunday at the Virginia Tennis Facility at Boar’s Head Resort. Sara Ziodato scored the only point for the Cavaliers (11-4, 3-3 ACC) as she won a three-set victory on court 6.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Emma Navarro and Hibah Shaikh opened the match with a 6-2 double victory against number 16 Eden Richardson and Daevenia Achong at the top court, but the Hurricanes (11-2, 6-1 ACC) won 6- 0 and 6-2 on courts two and three to reach the double.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Miami won three straight-set single wins on courts 1, 3 and five to take the 4-0 lead and reach victory. A three-set victory at court two made it 5-0 before Ziodato picked up a point.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Richardson won Clinching Point for the Hurricanes with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Navarro at the top court. It was Navarro’s second loss in the collegiate singles game and their first since losing to Miami Estrela Perez-Somarriba on April 4, 2021 in Miami. Navarro had won 22 consecutive singlecharts match dates back to last season. She has a career record of 36-2 in singles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The comeback of the Cavaliers falls short<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

The No. 14 Virginia Women’s Lacrosse team finished the game at 5-0, but its comeback bid is out of time in a 16-14 loss against No.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rachel Clark had four goals and an assist and Ashlyn McGovern scored four goals to lead the Cavaliers (5-6). Aubrey Williams finished with 12 draw checks. Isabella Peterson led JMU with six goals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Virginia beat JMU 29-27, but the Duke (5-4) had a 24-20 lead and shot on goal. The Cavaliers led 20-14 in the draw and had six conceded tackles on three, but were 7-for-17 on free throws.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Led by three players who shot 3-over 75, the Virginia men’s golf team finished in 11th place after the opening round at the Linger Longer Invitational at the Great Waters Golf Course in Greensboro, Ga.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A trio of Cavaliers are tied for 46th place after finishing the first day at 3-over 75. This group includes Sam Jung, Pietro Bovari and Deven Patel. George Duangmanee is one shot behind them in 58th place after posting a round of 76. Jimmie Massie is in 78th place after scoring 79 shots. Chris Fosdick, who competes as an individual, is in 68th place with a round of 77.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
