AUSTIN (BLOOMBERG) – Destructive West Texas forest fires have increased by nearly 20 percent as violent weather threatens urban centers and residents of Dallas and Austin have been warned to seek shelter from tornadoes.<\/p>\n

The flames, which erupted late last week west of the Dallas metropolitan area, had grown to more than 63,000 acres (25,500ha) by Monday afternoon (March 21). While the fire threat remained high in the western beaches of the state, tornado warnings sounded over the central corridor of the state.<\/p>\n

In the North Texas town of Jacksboro, a twister was touched, houses, a high school and an animal shelter were ripped off.<\/p>\n

Statewide, the number of homes and shops without electricity has more than doubled to almost 70,000.<\/p>\n

The collection of threats was created by a clash of weather systems rolling across the Rocky Mountains and Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n

Houston, Austin and San Antonio are expecting heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous hail until Tuesday morning, according to the Storm Prediction Center.<\/p>\n

In addition to tornadoes, the Texas Panhandle in parts of Oklahoma were under a blizzard warning and could see 5 inches (13cm) of snow and 65 miles per hour (105kmh) of wind.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (Miso), which operates the power grid that stretches from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast, has asked generators and transmission owners to shut down all maintenance before the arrival of severe weather in East Texas.<\/p>\n

The worst weather is expected to open on Tuesday afternoon, Miso said in a note.<\/p>\n

In the fire zone, more than 400 beef and other beasts were killed and 110 displaced by fire and housed in temporary tents, according to the Texas Animal Health Commission.<\/p>\n

At least 433 flights have been canceled at Dallas’ two major airports, according to FlightAware, an airline tracking service.<\/p>\n

The storms are driven by “a classic spring severe weather setup” as a powerful storm sweeps across the Rocky Mountains and a deep reservoir of moist warm air emerges from the Gulf of Mexico, said Mr. Zack Taylor, a senior industry analyst at the U.S. Weather Forecast Center.<\/p>\n

In addition to the risk of wind and thunderstorms, eastern Texas, as well as parts of Louisiana and Arkansas, will face the potential for lightning floods.<\/p>\n
