This is especially true when you compare well-made built-in comparisons with standard purchased bookshelves. IKEA bookstores like the almost ubiquitous Billy get the job done with a modicum of the Scandinavian style, but there’s no doubt that anyone who walks into your home knows they’re looking for a bookstore that sells for about $ US 50 ($ 69) sells. That’s nothing to be ashamed of – but if your style goal is a little higher, there are some relatively easy ways to dress up your inexpensive bookstores.

One of the best is to transform them into built-ins. All your furniture choices make statements, and three or four Billy bookstores set against a wall make the statement that you … one day bought three or four Billy bookstores from IKEA. Built-ins communicate a little more planning and spending. The secret is that it’s easy to make them much more luxurious than they actually are. Here’s how you can make cheap bookshelves like expensive built ins.

What you need to create built-in shelves

As with any DIY project in your home, you will need some tools and supplies. The good news is that you do not need anything exotic. All you need are these:

Bookstore (natch)

Circular saws (or see table if you like)

Hammer

Colors

Interior caulk (that fits with your paint)

Trimming

Metal Clamps

Drill or screwdriver

1 × 2 wooden boards (or all scrap wood)

Wood filler

Putty

Finish Neel

Some of these materials may be optional depending on how ambitious you are and the specifics of your space.

Transform your shelves

You have your materials and you have selected (and deleted) the space in your home that you are going to glamorize with some cheap built-in islands. Here’s how you will pull this off.

Build or adjust the library. If you have purchased new bookstores for this project, assemble them – but do not attach the back. Cheap libraries usually come with a carton or particle board that folds up for flat packaging, but you will skip these steps. If you use a bookstore you have already collected, take that back. If you think you may want to reverse this process one day, be careful.

Keep in mind that this will make your libraries a bit shaky, so be careful when moving them so that they are not damaged. Alternatively, you can replace the backing with something a little more attractive, such as beadboard or a textured material – the key is not to use the cheap, flimsy backing that comes with them. If grooves are put in your bookcase to cover the back, fill it with wood filler, let it dry and cut everything smooth.

If you have not yet purchased your libraries, measure the space where you plan to place them and then find the measurements of those you are considering buying. Do the math to find the maximum number of libraries that suit you on the spot.

Colors. Paint the wall behind your bookstore, the canopy itself, and the trim you chose to fit.

Arrange your libraries. Put your libraries in the space you have chosen. It is best to fit as many bookstores as possible here to minimize the amount of space you need to cover with trimming.

Add supporters. To fasten and trim panels to close any gaps, you will need something to nail or screw. Locate the buttons in the side walls and attach a 1 × 2 plank to the wall so that it is flat with the bookshelves when in place. You may need to remove the tabs to install these strips. If you need panels at the top to hide empty space, attach a strip to the ceiling so that it is also with the bookcase below.

Shim and attached bookstores. Use a few shims along the bottom, if necessary, to level and even your library. If your bookstores have come up with hardware to attach them to the wall (so that they do not tip and fall on you, with your phone just accessible outside and that you are slowly being consumed by your beloved cats), attach them. If they did not, some metal clamps attached to the tubers would do the trick. In addition to the safety factor, this also gives your faux built-in stability and a firm feel.

Then, fasten the bookcases together. The easiest way to do this is to run a piece of wood along the top and screw or nail it to any bookstore. You can also just screw each bookshelf to its neighbor, just as you would attach kitchen cabinets together.

Close the gaps. Your bookstore is in place, but you have a lot of gaps around the periphery, and the seams between the cases show up. Make the gaps and cut medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or plywood sheets to fit, attaching them to the edges of your bookstores (flush with the inside edge) and the outer edges of the strips you are attaching to the wall.

Trimming. Cut your trim and secure it with wood glue and / or finish nails around the edges and along the vertical edges where the bookcases meet. Depending on your level of experience and comfort with sea-cutting angles, you can choose a simple trimming style like shaker-style trimming, which can be very forgiving for people who measure four times and are still wrong.

Finished. You have closed your gaps and the bookcases look as if they were part of the original house building – but you are not quite done. You have to finish everything:

Caulk along the edges of the trim and wall, and along the trim edges at the bookstores themselves. If you can match your caulk with your paint, great. Otherwise, make sure you choose a paintable caulk.

Optionally fill in the holes for shelf supports that you do not use with wood filler, sand smooth, and paint. This gives it a more finished look but removes the flexibility to change your shelf configuration right away.

Touch up the paint as needed.

Boom! Built-ins. The best part about this project is that it is trim designed to hide things, so if your gaps are a bit removed, no one will ever know when you fixed the trim – and when you make your measurements, you can often just extend your trim choice to cover more space. The best part is that you only spend very little money to get a really expensive look.

When it comes to interior design, everyone’s tastes are different, but whether you think animal prints and gilded fixtures are the epitome of style or shades of white, off-white and almost white are the only acceptable colors in a home , one thing is pretty universal: Built-in shelf is equal class.
