An expert reveals, however, that what car companies offer is no insurance at all.<\/p>\n

“Car rental agencies insure their fleets, so what they offer is not actual insurance,” Matt Hands, insurance business director at the comparison website Ratehub.ca wrote. “Your money goes into a total fund, so if you pay for the various coverage options, it means they can not sue you for damages.”<\/p>\n

He adds that when it comes to buying car rental insurance, it pays for drivers to “know the rules” so that they “make an intelligent, informed and financially sound decision.”<\/p>\n

Here are the four types of coverage that car insurance provides, according to Hands.<\/p>\n

Collision damage waiver (CDW) or loss damage waiver (LDW)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This disclaimer protects the rental car and nothing else. Just like collision and comprehensive insurance and standard car policies, it covers the costs if something happens to the rental car such as fire, theft or accident.<\/p>\n

According to insurance brokerage Isure.ca, the rental car companies have also started to pay additional costs for the following:<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n
  • Lost revenue while the car is being repaired<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  • Administrative costs to cover the repair<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  • Towing service costs<\/li>\n

    <\/p>\n

  • Depreciation on the resale value of the vehicle after an accident<\/li>\n

    \n<\/ul>\n

    The hands have meanwhile also reminded drivers that CDW or LDW is not an insurance policy, noting that “by signing the agreement, you are paying the car rental agency to waive their right to sue you for damages or losses.”<\/p>\n

    2. Liability insurance (LI)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Liability insurance protects the driver if they are in a collision fault and cause damage or injury to other people in their property. This type of coverage covers the costs associated with the accident, including medical expenses and vehicle repair.<\/p>\n

    Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    This provides accidental death and destruction cover for anyone traveling with the rental car at the time of the accident. The benefits package varies between rental car agencies, but typically the driver is covered up to $ 100,000, while passengers are entitled to up to $ 10,000 in payouts.<\/p>\n

    4. Personal effects coverage (PEC)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Also known as personal protection, this covers the driver’s personal belongings in case they are lost, damaged or stolen while in the rental car. Coverage often has a limit, typically $ 500 per person, and a deduction – usually $ 25 per passenger – is also required before a claim is paid out.<\/p>\n

    How much does rental car insurance cost?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Ratehub.ca pegs the cost of each type of coverage into the following price range:<\/p>\n

      <\/p>\n
    • CDW \/ LDW: $ 9 to $ 30 per day<\/li>\n

      <\/p>\n

    • LI: $ 15 to $ 30 per day<\/li>\n

      <\/p>\n

    • PAI: $ 7 to $ 10 per day<\/li>\n

      <\/p>\n

    • PEC: $ 2 to $ 5 per day<\/li>\n

      Based on this, rental car insurance premiums can vary between $ 33 and $ 85 per day if the driver decides to purchase all available coverages. This could easily cost around $ 230 to $ 595 a week, so Hands advises car owners to “understand your coverages and fill in the gaps as necessary” to avoid “extra costs that you do not have to pay in the first place” . ” <\/p>\n

      When is rental car insurance a good idea?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      There are several situations, however, where the insurance of a rental car is a logical choice. Here are some of them, according to Ratehub.ca.<\/p>\n

      • The driver has no car insurance policy<\/li>\n

        <\/p>\n

      • The driver’s credit card does not offer car coverage<\/li>\n

        <\/p>\n

      • The driver’s car insurance policy does not have the proper development that allows them to be transferred to the rental car<\/li>\n

        <\/p>\n

      • The car ladder is considered high-risk and can not afford the risk of another claim<\/li>\n

        <\/p>\n

      • The driver travels for business, which means insurance should be paid by the employer if it is those who rented the vehicle<\/li>\n

        <\/p>\n

      • The driver rents a sports car, truck or luxury or specialized vehicle<\/li>\n

        <\/p>\n

      • The driver car insurance policy only covers the minimum<\/li>\n

        <\/p>\n

      • The driver travels outside of North America, which is no longer covered by standard car insurance<\/li>\n

        When is it not necessary to take out car insurance?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

        Experts also advise car owners to check the coverages they already have, as rental car insurance may already be covered in these policies. These include:<\/p>\n

        1. Personal car insurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        Strongest car insurance provider in Ontario offer additional coverage for non-owned cars, formally referred to as the Ontario Policy Change Form (OPCF) 27. This support provides coverage for all vehicle insurance vehicles, including rental cars and a friend’s vehicle. Other provinces offer similar approval – QEF27 in Quebec and SEF27 in private insured provinces such as Alberta and Atlantic Canada. If the driver’s car insurance policy includes these excuses, then additional coverage by a car rental company will be unnecessary.<\/p>\n

        2. Free credit card coverage<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        Many credit cards already offer collision damage to rental cars. To qualify for this coverage, the cardholder may have to pay the full amount of the lease on their credit card and refuse the waiver of collision damage offered by the car rental company.<\/p>\n

        Third party liability is not covered, however, according to consumer website CreditcardGenius.ca, while rental car insurance obtained by purchasing travel insurance through a credit card often comes with an upper limit, so it pays to check what those limits are . <\/p>\n

        3. Personal items cover and home insurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        Homeowners, condo, and tenant insurance policies provide content coverage that extends to personal belongings that are lost or damaged outside the home, including rental cars. Those who already have home insurance may decide not to take out personal effects coverage.<\/p>\n

        4. Life insurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        Those who plan life insurance or group health benefits with short- or long-term disability coverage may choose to waive personal accident insurance. But experts suggest that insurers first check with their insurers to make sure they are completely covered by accidents.<\/p>\n

        5. Travel insurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        Some travel cancellations, travel health and medical evacuation insurance policies allow rental car coverage to be included as an add-on, according to Isure.ca. This often covers loss or damage to the vehicle.
