Lloyds Banking Group has announced the closure of 60 branches across the UK.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The company said it will close 24 Lloyds Bank branches, 19 Bank of Scotland branches and 17 Halifax branches as customers switch to online and mobile banking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Unite union said closures were “devastating” for communities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lloyds said it will try to find new roles for the 124 staff affected by the closures, which are due to take place between June and September.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The bank said the number of online banking customers has increased by 12% over the past two years, while mobile app users have increased by 27%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Vim Maru, Group Retail Director, said: \u201cLike many other high street stores, fewer and fewer customers are choosing to visit our branches. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Our branch network is an important way for us to support our customers, but we need to adapt to the significant growth of customers who are choosing to do the majority of their daily banking online.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It recommended creating banking hubs in three locations – Buckingham, Cottingham and Troon – where customers of all major banks could do their day-to-day banking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lloyds said it will continue to operate at those locations until the hubs are established.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The group currently has 739 Lloyds branches, 553 Halifax branches and 184 Bank of Scotland locations. Last year it announced plans to close more than 90 stores.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

However, Unite National Officer Caren Evans said Lloyds \u201cshould not be allowed to give up 60 other local communities where bank branches play a significant role.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhen a bank branch closes, the heart of the local community is ripped out and the consequences are devastating<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Unite recognizes that simply leaving an ATM in place of a bustling bank branch is grossly inadequate.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
