Due to the sharp increase in basic fees on standard electricity bills, customers are confronted with very different cost increases depending on where they live. <\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Customers in southern Scotland, Merseyside, North Wales and South West England will double daily payments from April.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Those in London and the east of England will see increases of less than 60%. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

All consumer bills include a basic fee; a fixed daily payment covering deployment costs and other charges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Regulator Ofgem limits them for consumers to standard standard fares in England, Wales and Scotland, although the cap varies by region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Basic charges don’t make up the bulk of an energy bill, but they’re expected to rise by an average of more than \u00a371 a year in April. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Jeehan Saleh and Hesham Hussain told the BBC the wide regional disparities are unfair at a time when energy bills are soaring. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

They said they were “not shocked” to learn that where they live in Garston, in South Liverpool, permanent charges would be twice as high as other areas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Surprise, surprise, Liverpool again, isn’t it,” said Hesham.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“It always hits us the hardest,” added Jeehan. \u201cThere are people in poorer areas where we work who are choosing between food bills and energy bills. Thankfully we’re not in that position, but it’s not too far from home. They’re already feeling it in so many areas, that’s just hitting another one.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Due to the different costs of electricity supply to households in rural or more remote areas, the basic price has always varied depending on where you live. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    However, research by the BBC has shown that this spring’s increase varies disproportionately across different parts of the UK when comparing standard variable electricity tariffs paid by direct debit. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Analysts told the BBC they believe local distributors and suppliers are shifting charges that were once part of a consumer’s unit price of energy (which now has a strict cap) to their base charge. They also increase the base fees for each region to the maximum level, which is a big jump for some places. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The average increase – of just under 20p a day – will increase a standard electricity tariff by more than \u00a371 a year. But in North Wales and Merseyside, the South West, the Midlands, South Scotland and South Wales, the increase will be over \u00a380 a year. Add less than \u00a330 in London. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    • South Wales: up 23p a day to 46p – a 94% increase <\/li>\n
    • Southern Scotland: up 24p a day to 47p – an increase of 100% <\/li>\n
    • South Western: up 25p a day to 49p – a 101% increase <\/li>\n

      The changes are slightly different for customers using prepaid meters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      \n

      Households in England, Scotland and Wales are bracing for an even bigger blow when the energy price cap – which caps the consumer price per unit of gas and electricity – also rises in April. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      \n

      In Liverpool, David and Joan Boyle told us their energy bill has gone up by \u00a3700. They’re happy they’ll make it, but say they’re worried about other people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      \n

      Elsewhere there were more concerns. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      \n

      “Permanent charges should be the same everywhere, shouldn’t they,” said Kev Oloughlin. He was enjoying a day in the sun with his son Leo. He told us that they would “usually shop every year as bills come in, but right now it’s pointless”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      \n

      He added: “We’re managing things just fine, but we’re aware that the heating is on and things like that. Everyone’s gotta tighten their belts a minute, right?”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      \n

      The basic fee not only covers costs such as network maintenance, management fees and certain government regulations. It’s also the part of your bill that contributes to the costs of the 28 utilities that have gone bust since last fall in a cost crunch caused by soaring wholesale energy prices. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      \n

      Ofgem told the BBC that the levy, which will be added to bills to pay the costs associated with busting energy companies, has been spread evenly across the country. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      \n

      According to this, the basic fees in some regions are rising more than in others due to a redistribution of network costs, the level of which varies depending on the distribution network.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      \n

      The BBC contacted major suppliers British Gas, Scottish Power, EDF, EOn, Ovo\/SSE, Shell, Octopus and Bulb and almost all confirmed they now have a majority of customers on a standard tariff controlled by the Ofgem cap will. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      Three of the largest suppliers, British Gas, Scottish and Ovo\/SSE, declined to provide details of their charges, calling them “commercially sensitive”. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      However, EOn, EDF, Shell, Octopus and Bulb confirmed that they are increasing base charges for these tariffs in line with the standard charge cap, taking example prices (including VAT) from Bulb, EDF and Shell from 32p per day in London and 38p in London London vary in the east, down to around 50 pence in northern Scotland and in the south west. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      And it’s not an expense that can be avoided by shopping. Tariffs actively selected by the customer, e.g. B. Fixed price tariffs, while not subject to the standard tariff cap for standard fees, there are only a handful of such offers in the market. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      Moneysupermarket told the BBC only five fixed tariffs would be available to consumers from March 14. In comparison, in 2021 there are about 96 fixed offers available at the same time. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      Fees are certainly not the largest part of your energy bill, and they are dwarfed by the massive increases in the unit price of the energy you use. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      \n

      But under normal circumstances, an extra \u00a380 a year on your energy bill would not go unnoticed from just standing charges, especially as they are rising much faster in some areas than others. So is something fishy?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      Ofgem assures me that the additional costs of failed energy companies will be shared evenly across the country. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
