Pep Guardiola would “love” captain Bernardo Silva to “finish his career” at <\/b>Manchester City<\/b> but says it is up to the player to make the decision on whether he stays or leaves the club.<\/b><\/p>\n

Last week, City assistant Pep Lijnders hinted Silva’s nine-year spell at the club will end this summer, saying “every good story comes to an end”.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season and he has been linked with a move to La Liga leaders Barcelona, Serie A side Juventus and teams in Major League Soccer. <\/p>\n

But Guardiola suggested that hope of Silva staying at the club was not lost as the Portugal international is yet to communicate a decision over his future. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“I’m so grumpy with Bernardo because a month ago I said ‘if you take a decision I have to be the first to [know]’ and he didn’t say anything to me yet,” said Guardiola. <\/p>\n

“I think the proper one must be Bernardo, I don’t know if he has already decided. I said, jokingly, ‘tell me I deserve it’ but he didn’t tell me so I don’t know what’s going on.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lijnders made the comments after City’s 4-0 FA quarter-final win against Liverpool last weekend, with Guardiola unable to fulfill media duties as he was serving a touchline ban. <\/p>\n

“You never replace a player with the same kind of player because they don’t exist,” said Lijnders.<\/p>\n

“But every good story comes to an end, and I hope he enjoys the last months – there are only six weeks – and has a good farewell.”<\/p>\n

Silva, a 2017 signing from French club Monaco, made his 450th appearance for City in the EFL Cup victory against Arsenal last month. <\/p>\n

The 31-year-old was made club captain last summer following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne. <\/p>\n

“He is not the tallest one, the most muscular one, or score 50 goals or make 50 assists a season,” said Guardiola.<\/p>\n

“These are the type of players that are spotlighted and everyone talks about. From nine years, I know him quite well and for what a manager requires.<\/p>\n

“All managers would say how much they love him because he is incredibly competitive, has a fire inside him always. In the toughest moments and on the biggest stages, he is always there.<\/p>\n

“He has been an incredible signing for us, incredible. I love this club and I would love if he could stay and finish his career here but I do not know. He will decide what he will decide. It is his decision.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
