Liverpool<\/b> have appointed Andoni Iraola as their head coach on a two-year contract following the sacking of Arne Slot.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Reds announced Slot’s exit on Saturday, a year after the Dutchman guided them to the Premier League title.<\/p>\n

Former Bournemouth manager Iraola, 43, joins after delivering the Cherries’ finest top-flight season to date, finishing in sixth place.<\/p>\n

That was only one position and three points behind Liverpool and gave Bournemouth a place in next season’s Europa League.<\/p>\n

The Spaniard announced in April that he would leave Bournemouth this summer and he had been linked with Crystal Palace and AC Milan.<\/p>\n

Now he moves to Merseyside, with Liverpool having qualified for next season’s Champions League despite finishing the Premier League season with 60 points – their lowest tally since 2015-16 and a distant 25 points behind winners Arsenal.<\/p>\n

“Really excited, really excited,” said Iraola. “Because obviously you know about Liverpool, you know that it’s a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world.<\/p>\n

“But feeling inside and understanding a little bit more of this club, I always thought it’s a special club.<\/p>\n

“You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool.<\/p>\n

“But obviously the atmosphere, the supporters, the club, the players, the chance for me to coach top-level players, the chance to fight for titles. I think it cannot be more attractive than this. It’s difficult to find it. So, really excited to start.”<\/p>\n

Iraola is understood to be keen to bring Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper, his assistants at Bournemouth, to Anfield as part of his coaching staff.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The decision to sack Slot was made by Michael Edwards, who is the Fenway Sports Group chief executive of football, and Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes. Together, they decided the club required a more front-foot, aggressive and urgent style of football.<\/p>\n

Iraola was appointed at Bournemouth when Hughes was technical director at the Cherries, a role he left in 2024 to join the Reds.<\/p>\n

Former RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund head coach Marco Rose has been confirmed as Iraola’s replacement at Bournemouth.<\/p>\n

Liverpool spent \u00a3415m last summer on six players – the highest outlay in a single window by a British club – in a bid to retain their league title.<\/p>\n

They broke the British transfer record to sign striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle for \u00a3125m and also bought Bayer Leverkusen and Germany playmaker Florian Wirtz for \u00a3116m.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
