Sainsbury’s has announced it will increase salaries for some of its London staff following pressure from shareholders.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Workers in shops outside of London are paid the same hourly rate of \u00a311.05 as colleagues in London.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This means that all Sainsbury’s employees receive the voluntary Real Living Wage, which is higher than the mandatory National Living Wage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It follows Tesco’s announcement on Thursday of a pay rise for its staff.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In March, Sainsbury’s increased its base wage from \u00a39.50 to \u00a310 an hour for staff in its supermarkets and Argos stores.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

At the same time, wages for workers outside London rose to \u00a310.50 an hour, but wages within London rose to the Real Living Wage rate of \u00a311.05.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But last month a group of big investors asked Sainsbury’s to commit to paying all of its workers the Real Living Wage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sainsbury’s new wage deal means all of its supermarket workers across the country will be paid the relevant real living wage, in line with previous actions by Lidl, Aldi and Marks & Spencer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Sainsbury’s chief executive Simon Roberts said the company “wants to help colleagues plan and manage living expenses over the coming year”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“We are always looking at what else we can do and have therefore decided to raise the outer London wage rates to \u00a311.05 to allow retail peers Sainsbury’s and Argos to receive the Real Living Wage and London Living Wage from May” , he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Although Sainsbury’s has increased wages for its employees, the supermarket has not committed to paying third-party workers such as cleaners and security guards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Last year, Morrisons became the first UK supermarket to announce it would pay at least \u00a310 an hour from April 2021, quickly followed by its rivals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Lidl is the highest-paid supermarket, with wages rising to \u00a310.10 an hour outside London and \u00a311.30 within the M25 in March.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The Real Living Wage is currently \u00a311.05 in London and \u00a39.90 for the rest of the UK. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Half of the companies listed in the FTSE 100 share index are among the more than 9,500 accredited Living Wage Employers. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Set by the charity Living Wage Foundation, it differs from the National Living Wage, which sets the legal minimum that an employee can be paid per hour.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The National Living Wage applies to employees over the age of 23 and is currently \u00a39.50 per hour.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
