Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as Labour leader and Andy Burnham has been sworn in as MP for Makerfield. <\/p>\n

Speaking outside No 10 this morning, Starmer thanked his wife in an emotional speech, after describing becoming prime minister as the “proudest moment” of his life. <\/p>\n

Starmer also said he has spoken to the King and if there is a contest to succeed him, a new Labour leader would be in place before Parliament returns in September. <\/p>\n

The former Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, who travelled from Manchester to London to be sworn in as MP today, confirmed he would stand to replace the prime minister.<\/p>\n
