A life-size Lego bench has been built in memory of a 12-year-old boy who died from cancer in 2020.<\/b><\/p>\n

The bench has been unveiled at St Martin’s Primary School, Guernsey, where Matthew Girard attended.<\/p>\n

More than 11,000 pre-loved Lego bricks were donated by the community for the project.<\/p>\n

His family said he loved Lego, and Matthew’s mum, Sarah, added: “It is just going to be unique and hopefully a lasting tribute.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

During the process, volunteers have contributed to the project as well as Lego enthusiast Steph Porter and her husband who helped plan and design it.<\/p>\n

The bench is made up of a wooden structure with the Lego built on top.<\/p>\n

Grace Girard, Matthew’s twin sister, said: “It’s really special to me that everyone has come together and put bricks into the life-sized bench.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Jo Priaulx, Co-founder of the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation, which provides accommodation to families in Southampton when children are in hospital after travelling from the islands, praised the volunteers.<\/p>\n

“The idea of the memorial bench has been in the works for some time, so this is going to be a big moment for Sarah and her family,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Thank you to everyone who has worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life.”<\/p>\n

There is a Lego-themed hideaway room at one of the charity’s Southampton flats, also in honour of Matthew.<\/p>\n
