This is licence fee money it doesn’t belong to him.”

On a separate note, Brittin defended the number of appearances by Reform UK on BBC One’s Question Time, and was asked about coverage of a Clacton by-election after Reform leader Nigel Farage said he would resign but stand again.

Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party and Restore Britain have all ruled out contesting the seat – leaving the prospect of Farage facing novelty candidates like Count Binface.

Asked whether all candidates would receive equal coverage, Brittin replied: “You can look at our guidelines and we’ll happily discuss when the eventuality arises, including whoever’s standing.”

Elsewhere, Brittin also pointed to the BBC’s broadcast of England’s dramatic win over Mexico at the World Cup in the early hours of Monday as an example of the broadcaster “bringing the nation together even in a world of technological fragmentation”.

A peak audience of 9.1 million people tuned in to watch the game on TV and BBC iPlayer.

Asked how many people had used a QR code shown on screens during the World Cup to buy a TV licence, Brittin said he “can’t give you the precise numbers”, but there has “been a lift in licence fee payment” during the tournament.

Also on Wednesday, the BBC announced it has grown its global audience to reach over half a billion people every week for the first time since contemporary records began.

Across BBC News, the BBC World Service and content distributed by BBC Studios, the BBC saw its international audience grow to 502 million people – up 11% year-on-year.

The BBC’s new director general has described the traditional TV licence model as “a busted flush” and “no longer fit for purpose”.
