Last year, the national average of a dozen large white eggs was $ 1.60, according to the Department of Agriculture. Now, that’s $ 2.50. <\/p>\n

Sam Miller has over 8,000 hungry mouths to feed every day at Cedar Ridge Egg Farm in Northeast Texas. His feed bill for his growing business rises nearly $ 7,000 a month amid rising cost of corn and wheat, forcing him to raise egg prices. <\/p>\n

“I don’t raise my price. I do a little bit of it. I don’t earn much from my egg,” Miller told CBS News. <\/p>\n

Livestock economist David Anderson said the worst bird flu outbreak<\/span> in seven years it has killed more than 20 million birds in 24 states and reduced the supply of eggs and raised prices. <\/p>\n

“It takes time to adjust to higher prices and higher costs,” Anderson told CBS News. “It doesn’t just sting fingers and get more production.” <\/p>\n

Higher fuel prices<\/span> they\u2019re also hitting Miller\u2019s business. The cost of filling his delivery truck has almost doubled and he said he is doing his best to keep the prices of eggs from rising again. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere will come a time when I will have to do something or I won\u2019t be here,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Cereal prices don\u2019t just affect eggs. The price per pound of minced beef, bacon and whole chickens has increased compared to last year. Experts say they could go higher. <\/p>\n
