Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to make a long-delayed trip to India this week to strengthen security ties with the country.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He is due to meet his counterpart Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Friday, with talks focusing on defense and trade. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It will be Mr Johnson’s first major trip to India as Prime Minister, after previous visits were postponed due to Covid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Britain has been trying to persuade India to reduce its dependence on Moscow since Russia invaded Ukraine. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Last month, Secretary of State Liz Truss visited India to urge the country to impose tougher sanctions on Russia and work more closely together on trade, defence, energy and food security.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

India has not directly criticized Russia since its February 24 invasion of Ukraine, nor has it condemned the invasion in a United Nations vote on the issue. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mr Johnson’s trip will also include a visit to Gujarat, India’s fifth-largest state, on Thursday, where he is expected to announce a major investment in key industries in Britain and India, as well as a new science, health and technology collaboration. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ahead of his visit, the Prime Minister said: “With autocratic states threatening our peace and prosperity, it is vital that democracies and friends stick together. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIndia, as a major economy and the largest democracy in the world, is a valued strategic partner for the UK in these uncertain times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“My visit to India will address the things that really matter to the people of both our nations – from job creation and economic growth to energy security and defense.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In April last year, Mr Johnson canceled a trip to India when the South Asian nation was added to the UK’s Red List, meaning people returning from there had to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Initially, the government had insisted the trip would go ahead despite India’s rising coronavirus cases and the new Delta variant. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Instead, Mr Johnson said he would speak to the Indian Prime Minister online after asking why India had not been redlisted. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n
