A <\/b>New report from the UK’s National Cyber \u200b\u200bSecurity Center (NCSC) has warned about the threats posed by malicious apps.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While most people will be familiar with apps downloaded onto smartphones, devices from smart TVs to smart speakers now have them too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The government is deliberating on new guidelines on security and data protection for apps and app stores. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The NCSC’s technical director, Ian Levy, said there was “more work for app stores to do” when it comes to security.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mr. Levy added that cybercriminals are “currently using vulnerabilities in app stores on all types of connected devices to cause damage”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Last year, the government found that Android phone users had downloaded apps containing the Triada and Escobar malware from various third-party app stores.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“This led to cyber criminals remotely taking control of people’s phones and stealing their data and money by signing them up for premium subscription services,” it said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The NCSC report found that apps \u201care also being installed on laptops, computers, gaming consoles, wearable devices (like smartwatches or fitness trackers), smart TVs, smart speakers (like Alexa devices), and Internet of Things (IoT) devices be able “.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It includes an example from a security company demonstrating how it could create a malicious app for a popular fitness company tracker that could be downloaded from a link that uses the company’s web address to appear legitimate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The app contained “spyware\/stalkerware capable of stealing everything from location and personal body data”. The company relocated to fix the problem after the security firm warned it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The NCSC report found that appetite for apps had increased during the pandemic, with the UK app market now worth \u00a318.6 billion ($23.2 billion).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Center for Cybersecurity supports government proposals to ask app stores to commit to a new code of conduct that sets minimum security and privacy requirements. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cDevelopers and shopkeepers making apps available to UK users would be covered. These include Apple, Google, Amazon, Huawei, Microsoft and Samsung,\u201d the government said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
