A national shortage of infant formula<\/span> it is especially serious in some US states, where parents report going to stores to look for the product only to find empty shelves.<\/p>\n

In U.S. retailers, 43% of best-selling baby formula products were sold in the week ending May 8, according to <\/strong>the latest Datasembly analysis, which tracks baby formula stock in more than 11,000 stores. The formula was even scarcer in six states, where more than half of the best-selling products were missing from stores. <\/p>\n

White House Press Secretary Jenn Psaki said Monday that the Food and Drug Administration is “working 24 hours a day to address any possible shortages” and will study importing foreign baby formula to meet domestic demand. The FDA said it is working with infant formula makers to increase supplies.<\/p>\n

U.S. retailers have struggled to store enough formula for babies, which has led some chains to limit customer purchases. <\/span><\/p>\n

The five states with the highest levels of out-of-print baby formula products include:<\/p>\n

    According to Datasembly’s analysis, depletion levels ranged from 40% to 50% in 25 other U.S. states plus Washington, DC. <\/p>\n

    The thinnest supplies of infant formula were found in San Antonio, Texas, where at the end of April 57% of the products were not available, according to Datasembly. <\/p>\n

    The widespread shortage of formulas comes from the kidneys in the supply chain related to COVID-19 and was exacerbated when Abbott, the largest formula provider in the United States, was forced in February to remember several important brands<\/span> and close a manufacturing plant due to pollution problems. The withdrawal came after four babies who were consuming formula from the facility suffered bacterial infections. Two of the children died. <\/p>\n

    Rationing formula<\/h2>\n

    Retailers, including CVS Health, Walgreens, and Target, are rationing their formula supply and limiting the amount of products customers can buy at any given time. Other baby formula manufacturers have limited capacity and have struggled to close the gap on the market.<\/p>\n

    Laura Modi, CEO and co-founder of Bobbie, a direct-to-consumer children’s formula brand, has temporarily stopped selling products to new customers in order to meet the needs of existing subscribers. <\/p>\n

    “Despite an unprecedented shortage of formulas exacerbated by an unstable supply chain and Similac’s national withdrawal, we are committed to ensuring that our current Bobbie customers have a reliable source of infant formula for their babies,” the company said. in a statement on its website. “This means our store is temporarily on hold for new customers.”<\/p>\n
