Ford Motor Co. has asked owners of 350,000 vehicles to take them to dealerships to be repaired under a three-point withdrawal announcement. About 39,000 of those vehicles would have to be parked outdoors so their engines could catch fire, Ford said. <\/p>\n

The Michigan carmaker said in U.S. government documents released Thursday that it does not know what is causing the fires in some 2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs.<\/p>\n

However, the company said the fires could occur even with the engines off. There have been 16 reports of fires under the hood and 14 of them in rental company vehicles. Ford has not developed any repairs for the fires, which appear to start at the rear of the engine compartment next to the passenger.<\/p>\n

“We’re working all day to determine the root cause of this problem and the next remedy so that customers can continue to enjoy the use of their vehicles,” said Jeffrey Marentic, Ford’s CEO of Passenger Vehicles. a statement.<\/p>\n

Of the 16 fires, 12 occurred while SUV engines were off, Ford said in a statement. Ford said it is not ordering owners to stop driving SUVs, although those who are unable to follow the park’s outdoor instructions should contact their dealer or company.<\/p>\n
