For Zack and Brie Smithey, the smell of old tires will forever be associated with home. \u201cIt reminds me of the early stages of construction here,\u201d he said, at the couple\u2019s dream home in St. Louis. Charles, Missouri. (Note: the house does no<\/em> smells like tires.)<\/p>\n

In 2016, the couple built their three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath, 3,000-square-foot, two-story structure made of eight shipping containers, these large metal boxes you see carrying all sorts of goods (including , sometimes tires). <\/p>\n

Those containers, made in Shanghai, traveled around the world 12 times carrying goods before landing in a courtyard of St. Louis, where the Smiths went to inspect their future home. <\/p>\n

Brie said, “Was it still a little surreal to go to this container yard with thousands and thousands of shipping containers and think, ‘Shall we live in this?’<\/p>\n

Malcolm McLean, an American trucker, first applied to raise the shipping container in 1954, and his invention has changed the way we live and trade. Today, it is estimated that 90% of all goods pass through up to 170 million containers circulating worldwide. <\/p>\n

And more and more, people are using them in a way that their inventor could never have imagined. Houses, cafes, restaurants, offices, swimming pools, even a stadium for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, have been built with shipping containers. <\/p>\n

The Smitheys were attracted to shipping containers because they offered the opportunity to recycle and show off the couple\u2019s unique style. But keeping the project on a budget meant doing almost all the work themselves.<\/p>\n

Zack said: “A lot of people have unrealistic expectations about how cheap a container house will be. They forget that expensive parts, such as kitchens and bathrooms and HVAC, electricity and plumbing, are still there.”<\/p>\n

The result of his work is a beautiful house full of original and fun and recycled details. <\/p>\n

Another result? Zack has started a secondary business helping other people build container houses.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had no idea of \u200b\u200ball the opportunity that has come to us since we built this house,\u201d Brie said. “It’s crazy!<\/p>\n

“I think people see how houses have been built all these years and they think that’s what they should do. But you can express your own creativity however you want. And I think that’s been a way for us to do -ho. “<\/p>\n
