Love Island’s decision to dress the contestants in second-hand clothes from eBay could change viewers’ shopping habits, according to fashion experts.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The show drew criticism from sustainability advocates for promoting fast fashion with previous sponsors such as Missguided and I Saw It First. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But a new partnership with eBay UK could change the way its viewers shop, said fashion consultant Natalie Binns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The show’s bosses said it strives to be “a greener production.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ms Binns, a fashion shopping and sustainability consultant, said advertising second-hand clothes on the popular TV show would make viewers think and shop differently.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“This is going into the homes of ordinary people who may never have thought about the impact of their clothing before,” she told BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Regardless of whether [viewers] willing to make a change, a change will be forced on them because you could buy something beforehand [contestants] right after or even during the show while you can’t do that anymore.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In the past, the clothes worn by the participants on the websites of fast fashion retailers sold out within minutes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This year, viewers can access a “Shop the Look” tab via the Love Island app or the eBay website, where they can purchase items similar to what is shown on screen. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Although eBay sells both new and second-hand clothing, it has been confirmed that everything sourced from eBay for the purposes of the campaign is second-hand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Contestants at this year’s show will dress in a mix of new and tried-and-true clothing. Jemma Tadd, Head of Fashion at eBay, said this reflects how young people in particular are increasingly making choices about their clothes. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Our goal with this partnership is to get people to change the way they shop with the fashion they love – whether it’s taking baby steps and adding a garment or two to your wardrobe, or selling something you don’t.” carry more to make room for something else.\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

dr Amna Khan, Lecturer in Consumer Behavior and Retail at Manchester Metropolitan University, said the move was in response to changing shopper values. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe perception of used clothing has changed. Where you used to only buy them when you couldn’t afford anything else, it’s now fashionable to wear them second-hand,” explained Dr. Khan. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Research from eBay UK showed that in 2022 there would be one sale of second-hand clothes for every second.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

dr Khan went on to say that the cost of living has played a big part in the popularity of second-hand buying.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Consumers have never had to think that buying clothes is a luxury,” she said. “Now they need to rethink their approach to shopping and how to get the best bang for their buck.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Justine Porterie, global head of sustainability at Depop, is famous for the many outfit changes contestants go through every day and previously called the show “fast fashion’s biggest advocate”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Many former contestants of the show have also formed high-profile partnerships with fast fashion brands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Molly-Mae Hague has become the creative director of Pretty Little Thing, Maura Higgins has signed to Boohoo and Amber Gill to MissPap – further highlighting the show’s ties to the fast fashion industry. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The announcement of the partnership with eBay UK is a step towards making the reality TV show “a greener production,” according to Love Island Executive Producer Mike Spencer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The impact of fast fashion on the environment is well documented, with Oxfam reporting that 13 million pieces of clothing end up in landfill in the UK every week. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    According to the European Environment Agency in March this year, clothing use in Europe had, on average, the fourth highest impact on the environment and climate, surpassed only by food, housing and transport.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
