Tesla CEO Elon Musk has ordered employees to return to the office full-time, saying remote working is no longer acceptable.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment on the messages, one of which appeared to be aimed at executives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

People unwilling to comply with the new rules can “pretend to work elsewhere,” Musk said on Twitter when asked about the policy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Everyone at Tesla has to be in the office at least 40 hours a week,” he wrote in one of the emails. “If you don’t show up, we’ll assume you’ve resigned.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The emails said employees should report to work at one of the company’s main offices, “not a remote branch unrelated to job duties.” <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mr Musk added that he will personally review all requests for exemptions from the policy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mr Musk said full-time office work is what the company requires of its factory workers and that face-to-face collaboration is critical to the company’s success.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cOf course there are companies that don’t require this, but when was the last time you shipped a great new product? It’s been a while,” he said in an email, one of two that was leaked and shared on social media.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cTesla has and will continue to design and actually manufacture the most exciting and meaningful products of any company on earth. This will not come through a phone call.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Businesses in many industries are wrestling with whether to continue the remote working practices that have exploded during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Some sectors, such as banking, have signaled early on that they would expect employees to return to the office, while others, often in tech, have announced they will allow remote work indefinitely. Many places have opted for a mix.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Office occupancy in the US is around 43%, according to data from Kastle, which operates security card entry systems in thousands of buildings across the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mr Musk is notoriously tough in his own work ethic. He rarely vacations, and during a crisis period for Tesla a few years ago, he slept on the factory floor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“The older you are, the more visible your presence needs to be,” he wrote in one of the remote work policy emails.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThat’s why I lived in the factory so much \u2013 so the people on the line could see me working alongside them. If I hadn’t done that, Tesla would have gone bankrupt long ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Previously known for having a poor view of remote work, Mr Musk wrote on Twitter earlier this year that “all that Covid stay-at-home stuff has fooled people into believing that You don’t have to work really hard.
