Household prices are rising across the UK and a poll for the BBC suggests people are increasingly concerned about how they will deal with it.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Food, fuel and energy bills are rising at their fastest pace in thirty years, and many people are responding by cutting back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The BBC spoke to people in Birmingham to find out how they adjust their daily spending.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Paul and Amanda both work and until recently didn’t really have to watch what they spend on a weekly basis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cNow we do it every day,\u201d says Paul.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

They still get takeout and eat out, but not as often as they used to. And when they go out, they order a jug of tap water to keep the bill down.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“We’ve never done that before,” says Amanda. “We’re just paying more attention to spending now.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In the supermarket, they don’t buy branded products like they used to, but look for private label items and look for offers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Now we can’t just go in and buy what we like, we have to think, ‘Wait a minute,'” says Paul.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe have to look: What do we really want? What do we really need? Do we really need this luxury? Do we really need these sweets?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

They also poke around and buy in bulk “just to make sure if we buy this now, it’ll last a month or two,” says Paul.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Paul and Amanda aren’t the only ones cutting back on their grocery spending. The poll for BBC News shows around two-thirds of people are eating out less, while more than half are buying fewer take-out meals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

More than half of those surveyed had reduced the amount of food they bought. And more than half said they had skipped meals to save money in the past six months, with one in 19 saying they do so often.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

After being shocked by recent hikes in her gas, electricity and grocery bills, Rebecca says she’s decided it’s time to change the family’s shopping habits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“We need to take steps to get some money back,” she says. “We know there will be [further] Gas and electricity increases are coming in October, so we’re just trying to get into good habits now.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Rebecca says she’s never splurged on fashion, but her daughter Jess wants new things.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe need to take back the amount of money we spend on clothes. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“We have to make sure we’re making the best of what we have, rather than going out and buying new,” she says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

She was relieved to find that the secondary school Jess is scheduled to attend provides free school uniforms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In the last six months, three quarters of people have spent less on clothes for themselves and almost half have spent less on clothes for their children, according to the BBC Cost of Living Survey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Georgia also plans to deal with price hikes, and one way to save money is to spend a day at Birmingham’s Cannon Hill Park instead of taking her daughter Harper-Faye to a visitor attraction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“I don’t have the money to go to Sea Life Centers and stuff like that. That’s about \u00a325 a ticket,” she says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

She also limits the use of her car. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“The diesel [price] absolutely paralyzes me,\u201d she says. “I can’t go out like I used to, no chance. I can not afford it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“I have to make sure I get to work and back and that’s my priority right now.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In fact, she doesn’t do as much “fun stuff” overall as she used to, says Georgia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lisa, a disabled wheelchair user, is also limiting the use of her car due to increased fuel prices. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“I have to decide if I can afford to go out,” she says. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“I have a wheelchair accessible vehicle but obviously fuel is very expensive so I have to decide how often I can afford to go shopping – just to get to the shops, not to mention the price hikes when you can get them there too,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“My main concerns are food and energy, so I have to cut corners in every area of \u200b\u200bmy life just to be able to afford those two things.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Rising bills have an impact on life, she says. “It’s not just about this: I’m dropping a brand. If you’re already at the lowest brand because you couldn’t afford the more expensive ones, if you’re already limited by the cost of how much you can go out, it’s very bad.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Almost two-thirds of people in the BBC survey said they had driven fewer days and around the same proportion said they had reduced their car journeys.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
