Homes with smart meters could get discounts on electricity bills if they use less energy at peak times.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

National Grid hopes to introduce a program that could save people cash by avoiding energy-intensive activities like cooking or charging electric cars when demand is high.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The move follows a trial in which Octopus Energy offered incentives to 100,000 customers who reduced consumption.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

National Grid is asking all suppliers for feedback on its plans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The company said the plan “is not about energy rationing,” despite fears over energy supplies after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupted oil and gas supplies to Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A spokesman told the BBC the move was to create “flexibility” on their network and is part of longer-term plans not to increase greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    He added that there should be “no negative impact” on consumers as its goal is to balance the power grid during times of the year when heating and lighting result in higher overall electricity demands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Last week, National Grid ESO hosted a webinar with energy suppliers to ask and understand how viable their proposals would be if they rolled out the system nationwide after testing it with Octopus Energy in February.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    It is understood that a UK scheme could be up and running within months if energy companies agree.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The Times, which first reported the story, said it had seen estimates that households that normally pay 28.34p for every kilowatt hour of electricity they use could potentially pay up to \u00a36 for every kilowatt hour they don’t consume at peak times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    It didn’t specify how customers would redeem savings, but Octopus Energy said its consumers received credits on their energy accounts and also had a “self-refund option” where they could transfer cash to their bank accounts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Overall prices continue to rise at their fastest rate in 40 years, with UK inflation weighing on household budgets at 9.1%, the highest since March 1982.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Changes in the energy price cap meant typical energy bills rose by an unprecedented \u00a3700 a year in April and are set to rise even further in October. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Utility company Octopus Energy, which tested National Grid’s proposals, said smart meter customers reduced their usage on peak-demand evenings to save money.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    It said consumers saved an average of 23p per two-hour trial window, but some participants saved as much as \u00a34.35. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    “However, the savings over the winter could potentially be much higher if this becomes a real service, but of course that depends on how much National Grid would pay homes per kWh,” the company said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Energy companies have been urged to delay UK coal-fired power station closures by the government, which has said it is exploring “a wide range of options to further strengthen our energy security and domestic supply”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Economy Minister Kwasi Kwarteng wrote to EDF, Drax and Uniper this month to ask them to temporarily extend the operation of the coal-fired power plants used for emergency power generation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
