Sri Lanka has suspended sales of fuel for non-essential vehicles as it faces its worst economic crisis in decades.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In the next two weeks, only buses, trains and vehicles for medical purposes and food transport may be refueled.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Schools in urban areas have been closed and officials have told the country’s 22 million residents to work from home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The South Asian nation is in talks of a bailout as it struggles to pay for imports like fuel and food.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

On Monday, the government announced it would ban the purchase of petrol and diesel for private vehicles until July 10. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Bandula Gunewardena, a spokeswoman for the Sri Lankan cabinet, said Sri Lanka “never in its history has experienced such a severe economic crisis”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The cash-strapped country has also dispatched officials to big energy producers Russia and Qatar to secure cheap oil supplies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Sri Lanka’s economy has been hit hard by the pandemic, soaring energy prices and populist tax cuts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Without enough foreign currency to pay for imports of essential goods, acute shortages of food, fuel and medicine have helped drive the cost of living to record highs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Over the weekend officials said the country has just 9,000 tonnes of diesel and 6,000 tonnes of petrol in the coming days to fuel essential services.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    It was estimated that supplies would last less than a week with regular demand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    “We are doing everything we can to get new shares, but we don’t know when that will be,” Energy and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera told reporters on Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Alex Holmes, a senior economist at Oxford Economics, told the BBC the fuel restrictions were “another small sign of a deepening crisis”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    \u201cMobility already seems to have been severely restricted as people were waiting [long] queuing for fuel. But the total ban on private vehicles goes one step further and will add to the economic pain,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    In May, the country defaulted on its debts to international lenders for the first time in its history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Last week, a team from the International Monetary Fund arrived in Sri Lanka to discuss a $3 billion (\u00a32.4 billion) bailout.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The government is also asking for help from India and China to import essential goods.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said earlier this month that the country needs at least $5 billion over the next six months to pay for essentials like food, fuel and fertilizer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    In recent weeks, the government has also urged farmers to plant more rice and given government officials an extra day off per week to plant food amid fears of a shortage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
