Online retail giant Amazon has restricted search results on LGBT people and issues on its website in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The firm took the step after reportedly being pressured by Gulf state authorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Homosexuality is illegal in the United Arab Emirates – they are one of 69 countries in the world where homosexuality is criminalized.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The news comes as Pride Month, dedicated to celebrating LGBT people around the world, draws to a close.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“As a company, we remain committed to diversity, equity and inclusion and believe that the rights of LGBTQ+ people must be protected,” an Amazon spokesman told the BBC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“With Amazon businesses around the world, we must also comply with the local laws and regulations of the countries in which we operate,” they added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The company made the decision to limit searches after being threatened with fines by the UAE government, according to the New York Times, which first reported the story.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The UAE Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the BBC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Earlier this month, Kuwait’s foreign ministry said it had subpoenaed a senior US diplomat in protest at American embassy tweets in support of LGBT rights. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    US officials there had posted a rainbow flag and a message of solidarity from President Joe Biden for Pride month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Kuwait officials have criticized the embassy for “supporting homosexuality” and demanded that it not happen again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    LGBT rights are severely restricted in Kuwait and it is illegal for men to be gay there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Also this month in Saudi Arabia, authorities confiscated rainbow-colored toys and children’s clothing they claim promote homosexuality, state television said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    An Al-Ekhbariya report showed that Commerce Ministry officials removed a number of items from shops in the capital, Riyadh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    These included hair clips, pop-its, t-shirts, hats and pencil cases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
