Boeing’s boss has warned there is a “risk” the planemaker could be forced to cancel its 737 Max 10 jet over possible regulatory issues.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The company faces a deadline at the end of this year to obtain approval for the passenger jet from the US authorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Chief Executive Dave Calhoun said the push to get the green light was “a bit of an all-or-nothing.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Max 10 is the newest and largest aircraft in the 737 family to come under scrutiny after two fatal crashes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In an interview with Aviation Week magazine, Mr. Calhoun said he still expects a favorable outcome as Boeing plans to take its case to the FAA and the US Congress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“If you go through the things we’ve been through, the debt we’ve had to rack up, our ability to respond or willingness to see things through, even a world without that [737 Max] 10 is not that threatening,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“I do not expect [to cancel the programme], and I don’t want anyone to think that. It’s just a risk,” he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A Boeing spokesman confirmed Mr Calhoun’s comments to the BBC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The spokesman added that the company is committed to meeting the needs of regulators and “those of our customers to certify and ship the 737-10. Safety remains the driving factor in these efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Earlier this year, the FAA warned Boeing that it might not receive certification for the Max 10 by the end of this year. Certification is required for an airline to begin operating.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    If Boeing doesn’t get approval, it would have to equip the Max 10’s cockpits with a warning system under regulations that will come into force from 2023. Unless it gets special permission from the US Congress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The inclusion of the system means Boeing would have to redesign the Max 10’s flight deck and train pilots to fly under a new configuration, the BBC said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Boeing has ordered more than 600 Max 10 jets from 18 customers including British Airways owner IAG and United Airlines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The US requirements were introduced after other models in the 737 Max line were involved in fatal accidents in Indonesia and Ethiopia that killed 346 people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The entire global fleet of 737 Max aircraft was grounded after the Ethiopian Airlines crash in 2019. Authorities around the world have since re-licensed the planes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
