Network Rail has made workers a new wage offer to end a deadlocked dispute with unions over wages, jobs and working conditions.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Thousands of Network Rail workers took part in nationwide strikes in June. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The offer is worth more than 5% but is conditional on workers accepting “modernizing reforms.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But the RMT union said the offer was a real pay cut and would mean a third of front-line maintenance roles being eliminated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The company and unions have held talks since the RMT staged three 24-hour strikes last month that severely curtailed services.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Network Rail said the offer was “subject to achieving savings through modernization reforms” and said money was also on the table for a pay deal next year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Although money is extremely tight due to the railroad’s post-pandemic financial woes, we can afford to make this offer if our people accept changes and compromises that will fund it,” a Network Rail spokesman said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

All union members would be offered more than 5% and the lowest paid would receive a pay rise of more than 10%, a BBC spokesman said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In addition, there would be no redundancies for two years, as demanded by the unions, and employees and their immediate families would receive a 75% discount on rail travel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The spokesman said Network Rail hoped the new offer to its 20,000 employees would break the deadlock that has led to strikes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The RMT union said its executive committee would consider the offer on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The offer “equates to a real pay cut over the next two years and includes the elimination of one-third of all frontline maintenance and 50% of all scheduled maintenance.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    This is the case while senior Network Rail managers receive a pay increase of more than 40% “because they accept modest flexibility compared to RMT members,” it said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Union General Secretary Mick Lynch said: “Network Rail and the railway companies need to understand that RMT have signed deals with both London Underground and more recently Merseyrail that far exceed what is offered to our members here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    “Railway workers have lost thousands of pounds of income in recent years due to a wage freeze and they refuse to be underpaid again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    “We will not hesitate to call further strikes and try to coordinate with Aslef and TSSA if the rail industry does not seek a negotiated solution with us.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Members of the train drivers’ union, Aslef, voted to strike over pay on Monday, drawing criticism from the government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Aslef chose drivers at Chiltern, GWR, LNER, London Overground, Northern, Southeastern, TransPennine and West Midlands Railways.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The union said it was “happy to speak to someone to reach an agreement and ensure UK railways are not disrupted”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
