Thousands of British workers went on strike or threatened to go on strike this summer, including railway workers, airport workers, telecom workers, lawyers and postal workers. <\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Multiple strikes could cause widespread public disruption and impact consumer demand, companies warn. But unions say they have no choice. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Unions say wages are not keeping pace with the rising cost of living and their members need a raise. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Inflation — the rate at which prices are rising — is currently at a 40-year high of 9.1% and could reach 11% if energy, fuel and food prices continue to rise. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Trades Union Congress (TUC), which represents 48 affiliated unions with around 5.5 million members, has called for a “decent pay rise for public sector workers” and a universal minimum wage of \u00a315.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It said its research found workers had lost almost \u00a320,000 since 2008 because wages had not kept pace with inflation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Secretary-General Frances O’Grady told BBC News that after more than 10 years of stagnant wages, ordinary workers said “enough is enough”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Unions also say workers face cuts in working conditions and the risk of layoffs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), for example, wants Network Rail and 14 rail companies to guarantee their members will not face job cuts or “drastic changes” in work patterns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It wants a raise to “cover the cost of living” – so could potentially be higher than 7%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Some 40,000 of its members staged three massive strikes in June, plan one more on July 27, and two more on August 18 and 20.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

  • Thousands of BT workers have voted to go on strike over wage disputes. More than 40,000 workers at telecoms giant BT will take part in two consecutive 24-hour strikes over pay. The strikes will take place on July 29 and August 1, according to the Communication Workers Union (CWU).<\/li>\n
  • Lawyers’ strikes in July suspended criminal proceedings in many courts in England and Wales. The Criminal Bar Association (CBA) is demanding a pay rise of at least 25% for its members. <\/li>\n
  • Royal Mail staff must “work to the book” between July 15 and 19, refusing to take on extra duties in a bid to slow productivity. They will then hold strikes between July 20th and 22nd. The Communication Workers Union wants a wage increase of up to 9.1% in line with inflation.<\/li>\n
  • The RMT union has announced that it will strike repeatedly until the end of 2022 until the demands of the railway workers are met.<\/li>\n
  • Engine drivers from eight rail companies will also go on strike on July 30 over wage disputes, the Aslef union has announced. The date coincides with the Commonwealth Games being held in Birmingham. It is also the first day of the English Football League season, <\/li>\n
  • Hundreds of members of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) at Southeastern Trains have also voted in favor of strikes, the union has announced.<\/li>\n
  • Hundreds of British Airways workers at Heathrow Airport who are members of the GMB union are voting in a pay vote that ends on July 21. This could lead to strikes.<\/li>\n
  • The largest teachers’ union, the NEU, and the National Union of Teachers want a 12% pay rise and will “strongly” encourage members to join the industrial action in the autumn if negotiations fail. <\/li>\n
  • Unison, which has almost half a million members working for the NHS across the UK, said some of its south-west members are planning strikes in July over pay. <\/li>\n
  • Doctors, represented by the British Medical Association, are calling for a 30% pay rise over the next five years to achieve a real pay cut. Nurses want 12% or more. No strikes have been called, but it increases the likelihood of action. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Employers in businesses and the public sector, hit hard by the pandemic, say they must implement modernization reforms as their costs rise and consumers spend less. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    They also accuse unions of refusing to compromise at a time when they know there are labor shortages in some sectors. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    After the RMT announced its strike for July, Network Rail boss Andrew Haines said the union’s plan was “incredibly frustrating” – “even more so” given that the union had failed to bring the latest salary offer to members.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    He added that Network Rail could only fund higher wages by “modernizing” labor practices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The government has also warned that employers are handing out large wage increases for fear of a 1970s-style “inflationary spiral”. There, companies raise wages and pass the costs on to consumers in the form of higher prices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
