For Tara Newbold, the cost of childcare for her two sons is so high that she cannot afford to work full-time.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“It’s not worth going to work,” she says. “I would pay to work.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

New research from charity Coram shows that the cost of holiday childcare has increased by 5% over the past year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Government says it has spent more than \u00a34bn in each of the last five years to help families with childcare costs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ms Newbold from Nottingham works part-time as a sales clerk Monday to Wednesday and therefore needs holiday childcare on those days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

She says she can’t work full-time because the cost of full-time vacation care is so high that she would pay to work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    And while there are charities that offer free childcare, she says it’s not practical for parents who work a full day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    “There’s nothing that lasts a whole day like you would get while the kids are at school,” she says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Her sons, aged five and eight, are currently attending a sports camp on Mondays, which costs \u00a340 per child. On the other two days, while she is at work, she relies on family and friends to take care of the children.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    “It’s a logistical nightmare. I’m lucky to have a family to help which lowers the cost but it feels like going to work isn’t worth it because you have to pay so much for childcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Ms Newbold and her husband, who works full-time in health and safety, say the cost of childcare while on holiday is another burden on top of rising petrol and grocery bills.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    A new study by childcare organization Coram finds that amid the cost of living crisis, the cost of holiday childcare has risen by 5% in the last year, with childcare in the summer costing more than twice what parents spend during school hours.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Parents across the UK typically pay around \u00a3148 a week for holiday childcare, Coram says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    This means that six weeks of holiday care could cost working parents almost \u00a3890 on average for each school-age child.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    In contrast, six weeks of childcare during the school year would cost around \u00a3400 on average, according to the report. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Although the two are not directly comparable, as parents pay more hours during the holidays, the sharp increase in out-of-school costs will only add to the pressure on household budgets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The report is based on surveys by local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales submitted between April and June. It provides details of childcare costs for children aged four to 14.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The childcare provision covered by the study includes holiday clubs registered with an official regulatory body, those run by local authorities and clubs managed by the private, voluntary and independent sector. Childminders, informal childcare facilities and holiday camps are not included.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    For parents of disabled children, or for those who work atypical hours or live in rural areas, childcare availability can also be patchy, the report says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    “Many parents, especially mothers, will have no choice but to be locked out of work altogether or struggle to pay for basic needs like food or rent,” said Ellen Broome, chief executive of Coram Family and Childcare.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Ms Broome says holiday childcare is an “important economic infrastructure” and warned: “The lack of childcare places for working parents is a serious problem – not just for families but for the country’s economic performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    “Children have experienced such disruption during the pandemic and holiday care offers them a safe and fun place to stay active and connect with their friends while helping to manage the learning loss over the summer.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    A Government spokesman said: “We have spent more than \u00a34billion to help families with childcare costs in each of the last five years and put in place plans to help providers run their businesses more flexibly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    “Thousands of children from low-income families across England are benefiting during the long school holidays from our holiday activities and meal programme, which will be supported with \u00a3200m a year over the next three years.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    It has also reminded people that through its tax-free childcare scheme, working parents can get up to \u00a32,000 a year per child to pay for childcare, including holiday and after-school clubs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
