Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has urged the government to take a “more practical, sensible” approach to post-Brexit policy to allow more workers from Europe to fill vacancies.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mr O’Leary said he could hire people from continental Europe for jobs he couldn’t fill with British workers but could not get visas for them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Facilitating such visas would help reduce disruption to air travel, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The government said it wanted companies to invest in UK workers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mr O’Leary said: “I can hire thousands of people in Portugal, Italy, France and Germany at exactly the same wages I pay in the UK and I just can’t hire them in the UK at the moment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“And we have this bizarre situation right now that I can get visas in the UK to bring Moroccans in and work as cabin crew. But I can’t get visas for Portuguese or Italians or Slovak youths. We just need a little bit of more common sense and a practical approach to how we deliver on Brexit,” he told BBC Radio 4.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    He said enabling such visas would help alleviate the disruption currently being felt at some airports and skills shortages in other areas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \u201cThere aren’t enough people in the UK willing to do these jobs…especially during the peak summer season and especially at airports. Airport handlers and airport security staff are struggling to hire staff, particularly in the South East, at airports like Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Mr O’Leary has made it clear he does not agree with Brexit but says he respects the decision to leave the EU.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    A government spokesman said: “Leaving the EU has allowed us to introduce a points-based immigration system and we want employers to make long-term investments in the UK native workforce, such as B. Training, wage increases and better career opportunities instead of relying on foreign workers.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Despite current labor disputes in France, Belgium and Spain over wages and working conditions, Ryanair has suffered the fewest disruptions and cancellations of any major European airline in recent months. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    In the first six months of 2022, Ryanair canceled 0.3% of flights, compared to a combined 3.5% for British Airways and 2.8% for Easyjet, according to air travel consultancy OAG. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The Ryanair boss acknowledges some travelers are likely to face more disruption in the summer but says that should calm down after the peak period.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
