A primary school believed to be one of the oldest in the UK celebrated its 300th anniversary.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Great Wishford Primary School, near Salisbury, welcomed its first pupils in 1722 and marked the milestone this week with a history exhibition, costumes and a memorial tree.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In the run-up to the anniversary, staff held “history days” where students could learn more about the school through the centuries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Children at the school said reaching the anniversary was “amazing”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

An exhibition put together by the school’s management included archival documents such as 19th-century letters and photos of students during the First and Second World Wars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Students interviewed former students who attended the school in the 1950s and a local bishop visited the school to plant a memorial tree in the school field.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sue Bale, chairwoman of the governors, said the exhibit consists mostly of material from county archives and from villagers who used to go to school.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe started with a history of the school. It was founded in 1722 by a gentleman who wanted to provide an education for 20 uneducated boys and 20 girls,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe also have some fairly old documents from school life at that time, logs and accounts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe have photographs from the late 1890s. We also have some books of children’s work from the 1960s and 1970s,” Ms Bale added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Principal Stephanie Cleaver said it was “a privilege to work at a school with such a “rich heritage”. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWith this anniversary, our current students and staff have celebrated a major milestone and included themselves in the history of the school. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe celebrations were a beautiful opportunity not only to celebrate the school’s past, but also to look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“I would like to thank everyone who helped make the anniversary celebrations such a success,” she added. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
