(CNN)<\/cite>Houston Texans rookie John Metchie III is unlikely to play in the NFL this season after being diagnosed with leukemia. <\/p>\n \nThe 22-year-old wide receiver announced the diagnosis Sunday but said he was in “good spirits” and expected a recovery. <\/p>\n“I was recently diagnosed with APL (acute promyelocytic leukemia), the most curable form of leukemia,” he wrote in a statement.<\/p>\n\n“I am currently receiving excellent medical care, I am in good spirits and expect a recovery at a later date.<\/p>\n“Because of this diagnosis, I probably won’t be playing football this season. My main focus will be on my health and recovery. <\/p>\n“Thank you in advance for your support and well wishes. I can’t wait to come back stronger than ever. God bless you.”<\/p>\nAccording to the National Organization of Rare Disorders, APL is a blood cancer “characterized by a marked increase in a type of white blood cell known as promyelocytes.” <\/p>\n\n\u201cJohn rose to every challenge\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n
Metchie was the 44th pick in this year’s NFL draft. <\/p>\nThe Alabama product had 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns last season before staying on the sidelines for a stint after a cruciate ligament tear in December. <\/p>\nHis former coach in Alabama, Nick Saban, sent his best wishes.<\/p>\n“John met every challenge his life faced with tenacity and determination, and we stand behind him every step of the way in his battle with leukemia,” Saban wrote in a expression<\/a> On Sunday. <\/p>\n“It’s a blessing that he’s in a city known for great care and with an organization, the Houston Texans, who will accompany him on this journey.<\/p>\n“Our thoughts and prayers will remain with him during this battle.”<\/p>\n
