The UK will cut import taxes on hundreds more products from some of the world’s poorest countries to boost trade ties. <\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The trading system for developing countries comes into effect in January and builds on a system the UK first participated in when it was a member of the European Union.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Goods such as clothing, shoes and food that are not manufactured on a large scale in the UK benefit from lower or no tariffs. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The program covers 65 developing countries. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It comes on top of the thousands of products that developing countries can already export to the UK without tariffs and will affect around 99% of goods imported from Africa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The Department for International Trade said the work is part of a broader push by the UK to use trade to “promote prosperity and help eradicate poverty” as well as reduce aid dependency. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The system includes the power to suspend a country for human rights or labor rights violations, as well as for failing to meet its climate change commitments. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan said: “As an independent trading nation, we are taking back control of our trade policies and making decisions that support British businesses, help with the cost of living and support the economies of developing countries around the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    “Businesses in the UK can look forward to less red tape and lower costs, giving companies incentives to import goods from developing countries.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Many goods, from textiles to fruit, in 65 of the world’s poorest countries already benefit from reduced or duty-free tariffs when sold into the UK, making them more attractive. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The new regulation further lowers some of these taxes \u2013 for example for cucumbers, which cannot be produced here in winter. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    It also simplifies the rules by which items, such as Some textiles, for example, are eligible for preferential treatment. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The changes could save importers millions of pounds – although the price savings for consumers, even if passed on in full, could be marginal. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    When aid to developing countries has been reduced, the program underscores a government policy to use trade instead. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The scheme will remove some seasonal tariffs on produce, such as cucumbers, which cannot be grown in the UK during the winter, making them duty-free for most countries under the scheme during this period. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    It also simplifies trade rules such as rules of origin, which dictate what proportion of a product must be manufactured in its country of origin. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Mohammed Jabbar, chief executive of DBL Group, a Bangladeshi textile company, said it was a “game changer” for his company. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
