Twitter’s former security chief has filed a complaint with the government, alleging the social media company has gaps in its security practices and misled regulators, as well as its own corporate board, about its vulnerability <\/p>\n

The complaint by Peiter Zatko, Twitter’s head of security until he was fired in January of this year, alleges that Twitter engaged in “extreme and egregious deficiencies” in security, privacy and content moderation, and lied to US regulators about having a strong security plan. as the company is required to do under an agreement with the Federal Trade Commission. <\/p>\n

The company allegedly has no interest in or ability to count the number of bot and spam accounts on the platform, and mishandles users’ personally identifiable information and suffers regular security breaches, the filing states. <\/p>\n

Zatko filed the complaint earlier this year with the FTC, the US Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice. CBS News has obtained a version of the complaint shared with Congress, which was previously reported by the Washington Post and CNN.<\/p>\n

Whistleblower Aid, a law firm representing Zatko, said Twitter had an obligation to create a secure platform because of its “huge influence on the lives of hundreds of millions around the world.”<\/p>\n

“It took the courage of a high-level whistleblower with an impeccable reputation for ethics and integrity for law enforcement agencies and the public to learn the truth,” said Libby Liu, CEO of Whistleblower Aid.<\/p>\n

Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CBS News. In a statement to CNN, Twitter disagreed with the complaint’s findings, saying Zatko was fired “due to poor performance and ineffective leadership.” <\/p>\n

“While we have not had access to the specific allegations referred to, what we have seen so far is a narrative about our privacy and data security practices that is full of inconsistencies and inaccuracies, and lacks important context. Mr. Zatko’s allegations and the opportunistic timing appear designed to garner attention and harm Twitter, its customers, and its shareholders. Security and privacy have long been top priorities across the company on Twitter and we still have a lot of work ahead of us,” the statement said. CNN.<\/p>\n
