Cruise giant Royal Caribbean says it will partner with Elon Musk’s rocket company SpaceX and use its Starlink system to offer faster internet at sea.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Usually guests on cruise ships have to pay for the internet, but the connection has been poor in the past.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The partnership will “enable more high-bandwidth activities like video streaming,” says Jason Liberty, Royal Caribbean’s chief executive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Starlink relies on its large network of satellites orbiting the earth. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Mr Liberty said in a statement Tuesday that installation of Starlink on Royal Caribbean ships will begin immediately and be complete by March 2023.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The partnership marks “the largest public deployment of Starlink’s high-speed internet in the travel industry to date,” he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    “This technology will provide breakthrough internet connectivity onboard our ships, enhancing the cruise experience for guests and crew alike,” said Liberty.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Starlink, operated by SpaceX, is designed to bring high-speed internet to people living in remote areas. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    It relies on thousands of its satellites placed in low orbit around the Earth. This will make the connection speeds between the satellites and the ground as high as possible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Earlier this year, Mr Musk made Starlink available in Ukraine after Russian forces invaded Ukrainian internet services, shutting them down and attempting to block social media. The network was also used by Ukrainians to communicate on the battlefield.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The global cruise industry has been hit hard by the pandemic, which has crippled the tourism industry around the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    But companies like Royal Caribbean, which operates the second-biggest fleet of cruise ships in the world, have seen earnings improve as Covid-19 restrictions were eased this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
