Mothers are being urged to check if they are underpaid on their state pension after mistakes were made with Social Security records.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Since 1978, the system has provided credits for parents who have taken time off work to raise children.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

However, the government has acknowledged that details were missing in an unknown number of cases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Pension advisors LCP have launched a tool that people can use to check they are not missing out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As reported in July, the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) admitted to a bug where time at home with children credits – formerly known as Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP) – may be missing from people’s Social Security records and therefore affect whose social security records affect state pensions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Sir Steve Webb, a former Pensions Secretary who is now a partner at LCP, said: “Once again, this error is overwhelmingly affecting women and no doubt means many thousands have been underpaid for years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cRather than waiting for the government to fix the problem, I would encourage anyone who has received child support since 1978-79 to verify that the appropriate credits are on their NI record. If not, this can be fixed by filling out a form. and the result could well be a higher pension and a worthwhile lump sum.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Sir Steve told BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour that the problem arose more than a decade ago and was believed to be fixed. But he said new investigations had uncovered new cases, some of which could result in thousands of pounds being paid in retroactive pension.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In a recent case observed by LCP, Lorraine Wainwright, 68, from Gloucestershire, received a lump sum of around \u00a31,500 and her regular state pension is now being increased by more than \u00a320 a week after Sir Steve took her case.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ms Wainwright said: “If I hadn’t checked my own file carefully, there’s a good chance I’m still getting the wrong rate of pension. I applaud this new campaign that could help thousands of mothers get their contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said Ms Wainwright first contacted them in June 2020 to inquire about HRP. The tax authority said they sent her a form, which she received back, but could not reach her by phone for more information, and wrote to her again. It then received an official application for HRP from Ms. Wainwright in March 2022 and has since written to her to update her on her award.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Department for Works and Pensions said it is working with HMRC to identify those affected by the historic problem.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

LCP advises large company pension schemes and does not make any money from the campaign. No payment is required for people to verify their claim.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The problem is secondary to a scandal that has resulted in many thousands of retirees – mostly women – underpaying their state pensions. MPs branded the issue as “shameful”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In this case, the most recent estimate by the DWP was that 237,000 state pensioners were being paid less than their entitlement, for a total of almost \u00a31.5bn underpaid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This problem dates back to 1985 and affects the “old” statutory pension system. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Married women who had a small pension of their own could claim a 60% basic state pension based on their husband’s contribution records. An error with the DWP meant that they did not receive this money automatically.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
