One energy company predicts that households could earn around \u00a3100 in winter through a program to reduce peak-time energy use.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Octopus Energy said it expects to pay an average of \u00a34 each time a customer responds to a request for cuts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

National Grid will announce full details of the program later this month, which can be adopted by any utility.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The network operator said some customers could get up to \u00a310 a day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The financial incentive is intended to encourage people to wait until later to run their washing machine, dryer or dishwasher and not to charge their electric car when demand is already high. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The scheme, which is due to start next month and run until March 2023, aims to help the UK avoid blackouts by reducing energy use at peak times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On Thursday, National Grid warned that homes could face three-hour blackouts if the UK is unable to secure enough gas and electricity imports as demand picks up in the colder months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Number ten ruled out a campaign devised by the Economy Ministry to persuade households to use less electricity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    But the National Grid will soon announce exactly how much it will pay per kilowatt-hour if people cut back when there’s an acute supply shortage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    “Rather than cutting off entire parts of the country when we run out of gas, we can reward people for using less energy during peak demand,” said Greg Jackson, chief executive of Octopus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The Payback service is available to households that have smart meters installed as long as their supplier participates in the program. There are around 14 million homes with smart meters in the UK.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Octopus Energy, which conducted a test of the program earlier this year, said there could be 25 days over the next six months that National Grid is willing to pay homes to reduce their consumption.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Customers who managed to save compared to their previous average electricity consumption would be rewarded with a payment likely to be between \u00a33 and \u00a36 per kilowatt-hour saved, it said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    On days when the energy shortage is particularly great, the compensation rate should be set higher, the company said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    During the Octopus test in February and March, customers saved an average of 0.7 kilowatt hours but received much less financial compensation, the company said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Under the system supported by National Grid, customers, including businesses, will receive an email or SMS a day in advance with the time slot in which they would be paid if they reduce their energy consumption, typically between 4pm and 7pm Watch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
