Co-op trials reduced lighting in stores to save money as energy bills continue to rise. <\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The supermarket is introducing dimmed lighting in around 500 of its 2,500 convenience stores across the UK. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It is believed the cost saving measures could reduce electricity bills by up to \u00a34,000 a year for a single store.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It is followed by supermarket chains like Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, which are taking similar steps.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    A spokesman for the company said it is testing the initiative to reduce environmental impact and reduce costs in the long term.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    This is part of its long-term environmental plans to save energy and meet its goal of achieving net-zero operations by 2035. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Last year, the introduction of LED lighting in all supermarkets was completed to reduce energy consumption. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    It also uses a system that automatically monitors and controls lighting in stores to ensure locations are only lit when required. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Morrisons also dims the lights in most of its stores for the first and last hours of trading, as well as the “quiet hour” on a Saturday. The supermarket has been doing this since the coronavirus pandemic, helping to lower its energy bill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    The UK faces a “significant risk” of gas shortages this winter, industry regulator Ofgem said last week, which could affect electricity supplies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Already soaring energy costs have skyrocketed as the conflict in Ukraine reduces the availability of Russian gas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Prices have also risen because energy demand has skyrocketed since the end of Covid restrictions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The National Grid has also announced that it will launch a program starting November 1 to encourage businesses and households to reduce their power consumption at key times to ease the pressure on energy supplies this winter. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
